Spring training records don't count, but they do mean something. The Giants juggernaut just kept rolling, this time flattening an Angels' travel squad that mustered only 2 hits. Key lines:
Andres Torres- 0 for 3, HBP, SB. Torres managed to turn his 0 for 3 into 2 Runs scored. That's what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do, right?
Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 4, 2B. Pablo also made a nifty fielding play at 3B.
Jonathan Sanchez- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.23. It was against a team of scrubs, but that line has the look of a mature ace pitcher. He didn't walk the first batter until the 6'th inning. People who study stats look at Durty's K and BB numbers and say his 4 years of declining ERA is luck. Those of us who watch him pitch day in and day out have witnessed a transformation that isn't as easy to quantify, controlling his emotions on the mound, confidence in his stuff, more consistency from game to game. I may be crazy, but if you are looking for a sleeper to win the Cy Young Award, Sanchez might be the guy. I think he's still getting better.
Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 1.80.
Marc Kroon- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.00. Kroon is the forgotten man out there, but he's pitched well. Is he willing to pitch in Fresno?
The win ran the Giants spring record to 16-5. Jeff Suppan gets the start against the Dodgers in a day game. It's probably Suppan's last chance to get back into the musical chairs roster game.

hard to keep up with the wins -- believe it's actually up to SEVENteen
ReplyDeletei think kroon has something to prove, and he cant prove it throwing in fresno...so i have a feeling that next week he will request to be outrighted...do the giants have the right to use him in a trade?
ReplyDeleteas i noted in the last thread, vogelsong has offered to go to fresno if there isnt a space for him on the roster...to me, its exciting when guys are willing to sacrifice to be a part of the org...especially with the need for vet arms from so many teams
suppan will end up playing somewhere in the bigs...dont think he will accept assignment
wilson is auctioning his green cleats on ebay for japan
seems that not only are the players going into the season loose...but so are sabean and bochy...which is a total change from last year...i dont ever remember bochy making funnies with the reporters during last st, and sabean has been much more open with the beat reporters
The wins are nice but it seems like the starters have played alot of baseball this spring. The Angels had only one starter in their lineup. It seems that if the Giants were really thinking of trading or just looking, they would be playing some of the young guys more. I also hope the pitchers don't feel the short off season and all this work in the spring when September comes around. Last year was the pinnacle of my baseball life and I sure would like an encore....
ReplyDeleteI think the players have had enough off days and the pitchers haven't been stressed. The spring seems to have gone really well. Hopefully that is not the prelude to a big disappointment.
