Spring Training Game Wrap: Angels 8 Giants 0

Today was not a good day for the Giants. Matt Cain got knocked around. The bats were quiet against the Angels pitching. Cody Ross went down with an injury and Brian Wilson's throwing session did not go well. Key lines:

Aubrey Huff- 2 for 3. BA= .380.

Buster Posey- 2 for 2, BB. BA= .410.

Matt Cain- 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. The silver lining, if there is one, is that all the damage came in the first inning, so maybe he was just a bit rusty?

Ramon Ramirez- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. Ramirez lines have been noticeably better of late. The race does not always go to the swiftest in spring training.

Marc Kroon- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.25. I don't know if Wilson's injury opens the door for Kroon or for Runzler or both. They are both deserving of making the team.

Cody Ross pulled up lame in the first inning with a strained calf. He came out of the game and eventually left the ballpark riding a cart. One of the OF's starting the season on the DL temporarily solves some of the roster crunch issues that have gained so much attention this spring.

Brian Wilson had a throwing session from level ground for 7-8 minutes and then shut it down. Bochy said Willie was still sore. Wilson kind of blew it off, but then admitted he might have to start the season on the DL, "if that's what my employers tell me to do." ....or something to that effect. I doubt BWeez would ever admit he couldn't go, but he obviously found a creative way to shift the decision/blame to someone else. It's a long season. The worst thing Wilson and the Giants could do would be to rush him back too soon. Kroon is a veteran with extensive closing experience in Japan. He's pitching well. I say give the ball to him in the 9'th inning until Willie gets back or he proves he can't get it done.

  1. well, the pen door has now swung open for 2 instead of one....i can see alot of arms being tested out over the next week and a half

right now affeldt and romo look to be splitting time as the closer till wilson is 100 percent...can definitely see kroon in the mix and also doing setup work

if ross is headed for the dl...then that takes a load off of sabean and bochy

if belt goes to fresno, they do not have to dump rowand and either nate or ti stay with the club

its not the end of the world...its a long season

im still wondering if cain will have gotten enough work in to break camp on march 31...he is about 2 weeks behind

giants have been very lucky regarding injuries over the past 2 seasons...this had to happen

better now than in sept or oct...just ask the atl

  2. I think Casilla is ahead of Kroon for the closer role - particularly if Bochy wants to keep Affeldt and Romo in their current roles. I would expect Kroon to step in to an 8th or 7th inning role, particularly if Casilla took the 9th until Wislon returns.

  3. Lucky with injuries? I can see maybe saying that they have been good, but I wouldn't say lucky, as that implies there were no significant ones, and I think there were.

Rowand and Renteria were both injured for last two seasons, both starters at the time it happened, DeRosa last season, Johnson and Wellemeyer, respectively, past two seasons, Affeldt had some time on DL in 2010, Schierholtz last two seasons too, now I think about it, and he was basically in starter role when they happened.

Random thought, but I was thinking the other day how unfair it is that a long-time Giants fan like Frandsen won't get a World Series ring because he was shipped out during ST, but because Lewis was on the DL to start, he will get a ring. Not that I'm saying Frandsen deserved one for the way he acted in his last year or so with the Giants, but it's funny how the fickle finger of fate works sometimes.

I'm not too worried about losing Ross, we have a lot of players who, while they won't replace him in all aspects, they will be close enough. And I'm hoping Rowand gets on one of his tremendous hot streaks he's always going on in the early season before he gets injured and can't perform again.

That's been his main problem, I think, getting injured and then being unable to perform later in the season, better to say on DL until fully healed than come back and perform as poorly as he has.

Plus, if Torres turns out to be as bad as last season vs. LHP, it might end up a platoon in CF between the two, as Rowand mashes LHP.
