The Giants passed on the high ceiling prep pitcher Cam Caminiti despite having good success with that demographic over the years and Nick Kurtz did not fall to them. They did not get cute with the pick and reach for a two-way phenom or a high ceiling HS SS with injury concerns. Instead they went for the best college bat on the board and possibly the best one in the draft. It's hard to find anything to not like in Tibbs bat except some concern about his L-L splits. The concern is his lack of speed and average arm likely limit him to LF/1B/DH defensively which puts a lot of pressure on the bat.
While I would be happy with Caminiti, I like going all in on the bat. He could be a really fast mover and be in the Giants lineup as soon as next season.
Tibbs was the ACC Player of the Year on a very good Florida State team, which is very difficult to say for this old Gator.
ReplyDeleteUF's Jac Caglianone went at #6, and FSU's Cam Smith, 3B, was picked by the Cubs immediately after Tibbs.
