The Giants came back from a 3-1 deficit to win on a walk-off Wild Pitch. Key Lines:
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(13). BA= .302. For awhile it looked like Ramos' HR might be the only run of the game until Ryan Walker RHP gave up a 3-run HR and the lead in the 6'th inning. And what about Ramos? There is some regression in his stat line but he keeps finding a way to consistently hit the ball hard.
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB. Fitz appears to be the biggest beneficiary of Nick Ahmed's DFA. He was charge with an error but he also hit a HR in the 8'th inning to narrow the gap to one. He then drew a walk to keep the inning alive in the 9'th. Took third on Brett Wisely's single and scored an a WP for the game winner.
Brett Wisely 2B- 2 for 4, SB(2). BA= .285. Giants put a ton of faith in Wisely when they let Ahmed go. He was slumping but now has 4 hits in his last two games. Where would this team be without Brett Wisely?
Blake Snell LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 7.85. Finally! A strong start for Blake Snell and maybe just in time! Here's hoping for a strong enough second half that he will opt out of his contract at the end of the season and not because I want him to leave.
The win allows the Giants to finally gain some ground in the Wild Card race. They now trail the Padres by 2.5 games.
All Star Logan Webb RHP tries to keep the winning going tomorrow evening facing Chris Bassitt RHP.
Churn Watch:
Pretty big news today as Nick Ahmed SS, who had pretty much stopped hitting, was DFA'd. Thairo Estrada 2B, Wilmer Flores IF and Blake Snell came off the IL. Kolton Ingram LHP was optioned to AAA Sacramento.
Could Estrada be trade bait at the deadline?
ReplyDeleteI suppose anybody could but why him?
DeleteOne reason Is that Luciano’s future could be at second base.
DeleteMan, The Giants just keep scratching and clawing...And hot damn on RAMOS on an 0-2 count to do that,,He has progressed so much as a MLB hitter..
ReplyDeleteLove the AHMED news, did nothing for me...But my bet is that the Giants beef up as SS (Right hitting) before the deadline instead of an OF bat. Who that might be, I have no idea!!

When SF wins today behind Webb, they will be 1 game under .500 with Hicks facing Forever Giant Gausman tomorrow...
ReplyDeleteIf SF goes for someone at the trading deadline, and FZ will if he believes the Giants can solidify a playoff position, what they need most – and maybe all they need – is a reliable RBI bat to complement Ramos (and to some extent Chapman who has 141 more plate appearances) – the two of them rank 70th in MLB in RBIs.
ReplyDeleteTheir biggest need is to score more runs. They have 4 runs in each of their last 5 games scratching out 3 wins and losing 2 by 1 run, both 5-4.
Maybe a subject best left uncommented on regarding the signing of Aaron Judge, on December 3, 2022, Doc wrote:
ReplyDelete"The tea leaves are pointing strongly to an imminent Aaron Judge OF signing with the Giants. Of course in the crazy world of MLB free agency the longer that goes on the less likely he is to actually sign with the Giants and more likely there is some 'mystery team' lurking out there who knows how to get a deal locked up without the someone on Twitter sniffing it out."
This from TheAtlantic by Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin on Mar 9, 2023, skipped my inbox and maybe an "I told you so" from Doc is warranted:
"New York Yankees star Aaron Judge turned down an offer this offseason worth more than $400 million from the San Diego Padres, Judge’s agents told The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know:
"Page Odle of PSI Sports Management says the offer from San Diego was worth more than $400 million. Two other sources briefed on the matter said it was in the range of $415 million, over a term that would have been at least 12 years."
This implies all Judge wanted was the best possible offer he could get from the Yankees, and the Giants might have helped that along by going to $360MM.
That TheAthletic article also states that the Padres made a $342MM offer to Trea Turner who wanted to stay in Philly so much he left $43MM on the table.
That was a different San Diego ownership, before owner Peter Seidler passed away Nov 16, 2023.
How good would Carlos Correa's .303-.373-.513 look right about now.
