Game Wrap 7/5/2024: Giants 4 Guardians 2

Michael Conforto's two doubles led the Giants lineup in support of a bullpen game.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .302.  And just like that, Ramos has his BA back over .300.

Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .239.  Conforto's double in the first inning capped a 3-spot which was all the Giants collective pitching staff needed but he added another double in the 4'th inning and scored a run for insurance.

The Giants used 7 pitchers with Spencer Bivens RHP working the most IP at 3.  Camilo Doval RHP earned his 17'th Save after allowing his first two runners to reach base.  Giants pitchers gave up 11 hits and 5 walks and somehow only gave up 2 runs.  Some fortunate sequencing and 3 GIDP's helped.

The Win left the Giants stuck on their 3-game deficit in the Wild Card race.  They are 7-3 over their last 10 games.  They gained a game on the Cardinals in that span, lost a game to the Padres and gained 3 games on the Braves who are sitting in the first Wild Card spot.

Kyle Harrison LHP comes off the IL from his freak ankle sprain suffered in a weight room accident.  He'll face Logan Allen LHP this afternoon.

Churn Watch:

The Giants traded Spencer Howard RHP who was previously DFA'd to the Guardians for cash considerations.

(Sorry Team, I hit a wrong button and had to rewrite the Game Wrap.  I think I lost 3 nice comments).

  1. Went to the Reno Aces game again last night and got to see a second walk off win in a row by Andres Chaparro. Also had a nice conversation with Christian Koss’s dad and mentioned that I had just read about him on here and told him his kid is in a good situation with really nobody blocking his path to playing SS. Cool to hear his story and you could tell his dad was excited and nervous for him. His road has been rocky being drafted by Colorado and then ending up playing in the Red Sox system. Now he is in AAA at age 26 and he kind of needs to break through this year and get a shot or else. On this team that’s all it takes though and I could see him getting it before the end of the year.

    1. We're rooting for Christian at our house. My daughter is friends with his wife.

    2. The Giants may well make a run at Padres Ha-Seong Kim, but he will be pricey.
How much do they want a "companion" for Jung Hoo Lee?

  2. Tyler Rogers has pitched in 7 (all wins) of the Giants last 10 games (#80-#89) against LAD (2), ATL (2), CLE (1), CHC (2), gaining 5 Holds and 1 Win.
He's appeared in 46 of the Giants 89 games, just over half. Extended for the season that's 83-84 games.
The Rogers brothers have appeared in 83 games. Tyler and Walker have appeared in 90 games!
    Can this be sustained?

  3. I'm reading some mlb mock drafts has the Giants taking high school LHP Cam Caminiti at #13. He seems like an intriguing pick with mid to high 90's fastball. Is there a player that you would be happy to see the Giants draft at #13? The draft is always fun to follow. I'd like them to draft a player with high upside. I'm happy with last years #1 pick Bryve Eldridge.

    1. I imagine the Giants are happy, too.

    2. I just haven't had time to scout the draft this year like last year. Caminiti seems a fast-moving LHP SP prospect in the tradition of MadBum and Kyle Harrison. The draft is heaving on college corner hitter prospects. If Nick Kurtz falls to the Giants like Baseball America seems to think might happen he would be a worthy pick although profiles similarly to Eldridge as a defensively limited 1B/lefty/power hitter.

    3. Like McCovey - Cepeda?
      That might be nice...

    4. The DH gives additional options for those corner bopper types.

  4. It's a must to score early against Cleveland. Their 'pen in all but impenetrable. The relievers are 23-7, starters 31-25 (includes Shane Bieber @ 2-0 who is on the 60-day IL).

Maybe Soler at the top of the lineup will jump start the Giants (maybe), but Slater at #2 is sort of what people wrongly attribute to Einstein: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

All RHB except Wisely at #9 where, in 26 PAs, he's slashing .458/.480/.750/1.230 against LHP!
    Go figure.
    Maybe He should leadoff!

    1. In July, Wisely has fallen into a near hitless slump, 1-14, plus a 1-6 June 29th, 2-20 in his last 6 games: can he pull out of this as Ramos did?
Slater had taken a turn up, but is 4-28, 1 double, 11 Ks since the LA series.
Giants had plenty of opportunity in that game, but hand it to the end-of-game Cleveland relief, like game 1 for SF, the team that built the lead early prevailed.
Hopefully, Sunday, the Giants won't wait until the 5th inning to attempt a comeback.

    2. It maybe premature to write-off Wisely but he certainly needs some on-base discipline!
Long shot but coulda been the tying run
