Huge games by Jorge Soler and Tyler Fitzgerald at the top of the lineup supported an electrifying pitching performance by Kyle Harrison in a Giants romp. Key Lines:
Jorge Soler DH- 3 for 3, HR(12), 2 BB. BA= .231. We mentioned yesterday that Soler's move to the top of the lineup has turned him into an on-base machine. He adds a little power in this game.
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 3 for 5, 2 HR(8). BA= .330. 7 HRs in 8 games. While his current streak is insane, the general idea that he can hit and hit for power is not a new concept for him. He averaged 20+ HR's per season from 2021-2022.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, 3B, HR(15). BA= .296. Ramos is 8 for 19 over his last 4 games. As disappointing as this season has been, the emergence of Ramos, Fitz, Harrison and Birdsong should give us a lot of hope for the future.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .248. YtY is on a sustained hot streak. His slash line over his last 30 games is .317/.398/.537. He has one more year of arbitration eligibility. If the Giants are sellers, do they keep him or trade him?
Casey Schmitt 2B- 1 fo 1, 3B. BA= .238. Schmitt is up to be the RH platoon at 2B.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 6.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 11 K's. ERA= 3.69. Harrison has allowed just 2 ER in 17 IP over his last 3 starts. His ERA is 2.75 in 32.2 IP over 6 starts since June 1. Harrison and Hayden Birdsong have emerged as potential future aces in the rotation.
Mike Baumann RHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.84. To echo Dave Fleming, why is Baumann no the team and not Spencer Bivens?
Despite the Win, the Giants remain 5.5 games behind in the Wild Card playoff race.
The Giants play an old-fashioned twilight double-header tonight with Blake Snell LHP facing Ryan Feltner RHP in game 1 and Hayden Birdsong RHP facing Tanner Gordon RHP in game 2.
Churn Watch:
Thairo Estrada IF moves to the IL with a lingering wrist sprain. Casey Schmitt IF gets the call up over Marco Luciano IF. Keaton Winn RHP will undergo season-ending surgery to move his ulnar nerve.
Heh Doc, I cant seem to fine the start time for game one of the doubleheader.
ReplyDeleteCan you help me out?
Thanks
Richard in Winnipeg
P.S. you are right about the new kids.
I am somewhat ambivalent about the trade deadline. Like to see Giants hang on to Yaz for at least 1 more season.
4:05 PM PDT.
DeleteTrade YtY? Yes and no: YES if there's an offer they can't refuse, NO if it's, like, a long-shot prospect, but that's tooo obvious.
ReplyDeleteNo one, not even Webb, should be untouchable, but there must be "purpose" not trading just to move the furniture around.
Baggarly (The Athletic, paywall) pretty much dismisses the possibility of trading to get below the 1st spending cap, which could otherwise be a goal beneficial to next year's signings.
Has Soler's renaissance made him trade-able, or is it too little too late? Some team with a friendly LF fence could be interested, but many of the short walls are with non-contenders.
There is talk that the Yankees want Chapman, is it true?
At this point if someone wants Conforto (but why?), that would provide some opportunity for Matos (or someone) to play.
There is also talk that SF is actively shopping Snell: if he gets scratched from today's start, that would confirm it.
If the Giants sweep the Rockies today, will that signal an attempt to go for it with their strong pitching, and, if yes, why is Hicks scheduled for tomorrow?
A most interesting weekend is upon us!
DFA Conforto to find out if anyone wants him just to take his pay
DeleteTyler Fitzgerald: speaking of insane, the way he has been jerked around this year, month-to-month, suggests the Giants didn't believe his April numbers (.345/367/.621), stumbled back to him in late June to be rewarded in July (.424/.513/1.182).
ReplyDeleteSurely, this is not sustainable, but he has earned the right to prove it.
Yty and Comforto needs to go! They both go on longer bad streaks than good ones. A long with both Rogers brothers.
ReplyDeleteYtY July: .333/.400/.519
Delete07/27/24: San Francisco designated RHP Mike Baumann for assignment and recalled RHP Spencer Bivens from Sacramento River Cats.
ReplyDeleteWill Clark is a huge fan of Fitzgerald. He was on the radio a few months back saying he just needs the opportunity. Wish they would let all the kids play for the rest of the year. I feel like the worst thing that could happen is for the Giants to not make any trades, continue to play vets, and finish around .500 while Snell and Ray finish the year strong and then opt out. We get a mid first round pick, not enough of a look at our prospects, and no returns for Snell and Ray. At least one of them HAS to get traded before Thursday or this is exactly what will happen. Same thing as last year and the year before…

ReplyDelete"Hayden Birdsong RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.38.
Solid start for Birdsong who is one of several SP prospects who will be knocking on the door to the Giants clubhouse at Oracle Park by midseason."
Birdsong's first MLB appearance: June 26th, Game 81 (right on time as predicted), against the Cubs wasn't good but he has come on strong in July being one of the very bright spots for the Giants this year.
Harrison and Birdsong, both 22 yo, Harrison 18 days his senior, bode well for a long time.
Forever Giant Ty Blach was DFA'd today by the Rockies.
ReplyDeleteAnonther Forever Giant who IS doing well: Derek Law for the Nationals, 51 appearances, only 2 games behind MLB leaders Ryan Walker and Tyler Rogers.
