Game Wrap 7/6/2024: Guardians 5 Giants 4

An obviously rusty Kyle Harrison put the Giants in a 4-0 hole after two innings and they were never quite able to catch up.  Key Lines:

Jorge Soler DH- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .226.  Soler reached base 3 times from the leadoff spot and scored once.  One of the times he didn't score was after a bloop double to lead off the game.

Matt Chapman 3B-1 for 3, 2BB.  BA= .244.  Chapman batted cleanup.  He reached base 3 times, did not drive in any but scored 2.

Michael Conforto PH/LF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .240.  Conforto PH for Matos when the lefty starter exited the game.  He struck out with the bases loaded as a PH but later his double drove in Chapman from 1B.

Tyler Fitzgerald 1B/2B- 1 for 4.  BA= .276.  Fitz picked up Conforto in the 5'th inning to drive in 2 runs with a 2-out bases-loaded single to drive in 2.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.24.  Harrison was out of synch in the first couple of innings although he got BABIP'd pretty bad with seeing-eye groundball hits and a bloop off the end of the bat by Jose RamirezHarrison was out almost a month so this was really a rehab start at the MLB level.  Yes, they could have given him a rehab start in AAA or A ball if they had someone else ready to start but they really didn't.  Hopefully he'll be sharper next start.

Luke Jackson RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.11.  Just when it looked like the game was in reach, Jackson put it back out by giving up a bomb to Jackson's ERA over his last 7 appearances is 10.50.  Right now he's a black hole in the middle of the bullpen.

Despite the Loss, the Giants remain 3 games behind in the Wild Card race.

Hayden Birdsong RHP goes for the series win tomorrow at 10:40 AM PDT facing Carlos Carrasco RHP.

Churn Watch:

Kyle Harrison was activated from the IL and Spencer Bivens RHP optioned to AAA Sacramento, but FZ wasn't done.  Kolton Ingram LHP was also recalled from AA Richmond and David Villar IF was optioned to AAA Sacramento.

  1. Jackson has had up-and-downdown years, too bad he's been so up-and-down within 2024, h.
He's likely to be the first gone when Snell et al return, although Birdsong could be first after his start today depending on who gets to be the temporary 5th starter: Birdsong, Bivens, or continuing with Miller as a LH "Starter."

    1. Jackson was not the Jackson of 2021 & 2023 after his injury in Game 1, although he was very good when he first came back, then faltered in mid-May, then a good stretch again in June until he was just plain bad.
Given his present status he would probably get through waivers, and he would likely get the choice of pitching somewhere in the minors to get his mojo back.
A real talent when he's good, but, 2024 won't be

  3. Kolton Ingram LHP pitched 1 inning in Richmond, 0 H, 2 W, 0 K
AAA: for StL not too bad: lots of walks and lots of K's
He has played MiLB for 4 different teams THIS year:
Selected off waivers by the Mets, then the Rangers, then the Cardinals, and then FZ grabbed him, and here he is!
Is that Churn? Or does it require a trade?
