Solo home runs by Jorge Soler, LaMonte Wade Jr and Heliot Ramos led the Giants lineup in helping Hayden Birdsong earn his first MLB Win. Key Lines:
Jorge Soler DH- 1 for 5, HR(10). BA= .229. Soler has a 5 game hit streak in which he is 7 for 22 with 5 doubles and a HR. Homered for the Giants first run in the top of the 5'th inning.
LaMonte Wade Jr 1B- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB. BA= .324. Birdsong gave up B2B HR's in the 2'nd inning to Austin Riley and Sean Murphy. Soler and LMWJ answered back with a B2B pair of their own to lead off the Giants 5'th inning.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, HR(11), BB, SB(2). BA= .298. After Tyler Rogers gave up a run in the 8'th to narrow the Giants lead to 1 run, Ramos got it right back with a solo HR of his own in the top of the 9'th. Ramos had a 1 for 22 slump from 6/18-6/23 with the hit being a 3-run HR in St Louis. After a 3-hit game on 6/24, he had a 1 for 15 slump from 6/25-6/28. He now has 3 consecutive multi-hit games in which he is 7 for 13 with 2 doubles, a HR and 2 walks. Very strong sign that he now seems to be able to dig himself out of those slumps.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.68. After Soler and LMWJ picked him up with their B2B HR's, Birdsong went out and had a shutdown bottom of the 5'th inning. When the Giants took the lead in the 6'th, it put him in line for his first MLB win. That should be a confidence booster for him.
Bullpen- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. Giants bullpen allowed 1 run over the last 4 innings while the Braves bullpen allowed 3. Difference in the game right there. Camilo Doval RHP got his 15'th Save.
The Win narrows the Giants deficit in the Wild Card race to 2.5 games.
Jordan Hicks RHP tries to keep the winning going tomorrow evening facing Chris Sale LHP.
Churn Watch:
Mike Yastrzemski OF was reinstated from the 10-day IL while Landon Roupp RHP was optioned to AAA Sacramento.
The Giants claimed Kolton Ingram LHP off waivers from the Cardinals and optioned him to AA Richmond.
Raymond Burgos LHP and Trenton Brooks 1B cleared waivers and were outrighted to AAA Sacramento.
Is it weird that Birdsong has jumped my list over Harrison? I just see much more potential in his offspeed over Harrison who I feel is super reliant on his FB. I'll take Harrison for the rest of this year, but I will take Birdsong's career.

They are both exciting young pitchers. Is Cain and Bumgarner except closer in age a good comp?

birdsong has a very bright future and can be an option to come back up if jordan hicks has to move to the bullpen in the second half of the season.

ReplyDeleteI had given up on Heliot Ramos- I’m glad the Giants didn’t. I wonder what adjustments were made- points to good coaching. Kudos to Heliot for the hard work and the ability to make some changes.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it just takes time and patience. Brian Sabean used to say prospects needed 2000 minor league AB's to be MLB ready. Heliot has(checks notes) 2247.
