Game Wrap 7/4/2024: Giants 4 Braves 2

Logan Webb dug a 2-run hole for himself in the first inning but shut the Braves down for the next 6 innings while Heliot Ramos and Matt Chapman led the offense.  Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval finished it off for a series win on the road against a good team.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .329.  So here's the smackdown(Stats are from Fangraphs):

Player 1:  .329/.462/.445, 3 HR, -0.9 BsR, 13.4 Off, -0.7 Def, 2.0 fWAR, 167 wRC+, 186 PA, 80 Home Park HR Factor.

Player 2:  .296/.375/.467, 13 HR, -2.7 BsR, 15.7 Off, -9.9 Def, 1.9 fWAR, 142 wRC+, 376 PA, 104 Home Park HR Factor.

Player 1 is LMWJPlayer 2 is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.  LMWJ was a slightly better player last year too.

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .298.  What a pleasure to watch what Heliot Ramos is doing!  He's quickly becoming the first all-star caliber OF to come up through the Giants farm system since Chili DavisChili Davis!

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .245.  Where would this team be without Matt Chapman.  I happily say I was wrong about him.  Savvy pickup by FZ at the insistence of Bob Melvin.

Logan Webb RHP-  7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 3.09.  Another QS by Webb including shutout ball over his final 6 IP.  Tyler Rogers RHP pitched a scoreless 8'th inning for his 16'th Hold and Camilo Doval RHP earned his 16'th Save with a scoreless 9'th.

The Win left the Giants 3 games behind in the Wild Card race.  Yes, that is going to be tough ground to make up.

The Giants start another tough road series tonight against the Guardians with TBD starting for the Giants facing Tanner Bibbee RHP.

  1. 3 games isn't that hard to make up, there's still a lot of games to play. Hopefully Snell and Ray can step in to give them the push they need.

  2. Giants catch a break of sorts: Cleveland is in a slight lull with their thunder, and SF won't be seeing Cleveland's best pitcher.
SF faces Guardians' #2 in the opener but then see starters with 5+ ERAs.
Giants will need to score early, Cleveland's pen is strong.
Does anyone think Bivens, Harrison, and Birdsong will hold down the juggernaut?

  3. Man, you gotta give the the entire Giants team credit for fighting and clawing while down to 2 SPs for the last month (so it seems).. To win 2 out of 3 from both LA and ATL on the road is nothing to sneeze at.. Hard to expect them to do the same at Cleveland but who knows.

RAMOS has basically saved the Giants season the past month as they wait for all the pitchers to come back. Good outings by Snell and Ray the past few nights hopefully bode well for after the All Star break s and maybe we see HARRISON this series??? I'm wondering if they get the pitchers back if they go for a big bat (OF or SS) before the deadline (they have the assets to do it, if they want)..

  4. I like Biven's chances. He's pitching like Vogeslong 2.0.

  5. Lamonte is a nice player but the power numbers are what make Vlad clearly more valuable at 1B and as a middle of the order anchor. Power numbers are still important and right now Wade having similar WAR numbers reminds me of when Jason Heyward led the league in WAR. At some point we have to take our eyes off the spreadsheets and look at the player and when I look at Wade I see a player afraid to drive runs in when it counts. He is a little like Belt where he is content to walk in those situations as opposed to being aggressive. He also isn’t an everyday player like Vlad or a middle of the lineup threat that can carry the team for a week or more. Again, nice player but not even in Vlad’s zip code.

  6. You might take VGJr over LMWJr because of his age and some advantage in power although definitely a disadvantage on the field.
But if Wade can stay healthy this year, take him!
VG will be a FA in 2026 and may command $500,000,000. Or more. Could he be sold on Oracle? Haha, doubtful: his boyhood team wasn't the Giants and that other slugger snubbed SF.

    1. I'm not sure why the other anon thinks Vlad Jr is such a great power hitter anyway. He has 13 HR's. After you multiply by Park Factors he's down in single digits. The Giants have 3 hitters in double digits and 5 with 9 or more.

    2. Last night showed the importance of getting a lead early and defense

    3. Last night showed the benefit of getting a lead and defending it! 3 DP's stifled the great offense and the sluggers.
