Down on the Farm 4/9/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats downed the Salt Lake City Bees 1-0 on Adam Duvall's walk off HR in the bottom of the 9'th inning:

John Bowker(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .667.
Robert Coelho(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's  ERA= 0.00.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Coelho is a big(6'5", 250 lb) 30 year old RHP with several relatively brief stints in the majors.  He has not pitched half bad in those stints.  Walk rates have always been just a tad too high, which was the case tonight too.  He's going on my watch list.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Bowie Baysox 3-2 in 14 innings:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS-2B)- 3 for 5, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .600.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .500.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K, GO/AO= 9/1.  ERA= 3.60.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Tyler Rogers(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Pedro Rodriguez(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, W(1-0).  ERA= 0.00.

Mac Williamson gets off to a great start with 2 XBH's and a BB.  Stratton had the sinker working with 9 GB outs.  Pedro Rodriguez is a 27 year old RHP who had a sub 3 ERA in the Mexican League last year.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks edged out the San Jose Giants 3-2:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .500.
Brandon Bednar(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .667.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, GO/AO= 12/1.  ERA= 0.00.

Arroyo and Jones lead the offense.  Young Beedah put his newfound two-seamer to work with 12 GB outs.  No command issues tonight.

Low A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2:

Jeremy Sy(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
John Riley(DH)- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .250.
Andrew Cain(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Matt Gage(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Cain is coming back from long debilitating illness.

  1. Not really related to this, but some OF was just suspended for drug abuse. And some of the people at CSN BayArea are ripping Barr. Why the hate?

The facts are that some marginal prospect (Chuckie Jones) got caught trying to cheat his way to the top (or is just a pot-head for all we know) and suddenly the history of the man who had a hand in drafting Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, Joe Panik, Andrew Susac and a bunch of other interesting and/or top-talent players doesn't matter.. And, of course, he's also been such a good scout that he's been inducted into the Professional Scouts HOF.

But fans who probably washed out of baseball in little league are screaming for his head... I don't get it. Not every prospect turns out. Even if you're drafting Top-5, you're going to have misses. And if some have been slower to develop than people would like (Crick) or too stubborn to develop (Brown) or whatever, it doesn't negate that the Giants have built a 3X WS championship team around a core of players he's been involved in drafting.

    1. Chuckie Jones was something like a 16'th round draft pick for crying out loud! They are going to hang Barr for a 16'th round draft pick getting suspended? Yeah, I agree. Whoever is ragging on him at CSN needs to pipe down. As for Brownie, he is just one first rounder out of how many since Barr was influential in drafting Buster Posey in 2008? Again, nobody hits on every first rounder!

    2. Totally agree. Look at how many teams out there that have had several first rounders not pan out in the last 5 years. Brown was a bust and the cards are still out on Stratton but I think we all agree that Posey, Bumgarner, Panik and Lincecum were HUGE hits. Not many teams can say that with their first rounders except maybe the Cardinals, Royals and Nationals.

  2. Tomlinson!

Not quite the same as 'Duffy!'

Still, good to see him continue to hit like that. He had a good season last year between San Jose and Richmond.

Beede - looking to join Crick some time this year in Richmond? Do they have enough spots in the rotation? Is Gregorio a reliever just for now?

    1. I think Beede is going to move fast. Lancaster is a tough place to pitch. Just ask Mark Appel!

    2. Just an fyi-- Kelby wasn't in San Jose last year. Spent the entire '14 season in Richmond.

  3. Exciting to see Beede go do exactly what he talked about the Giants working on him with. Ground balls.

I watched some of the Augusta feed. Gage looked like he knew what he was doing against a hyped Red Sox affiliate. He was assisted by a nice throw home from Randy Ortiz. Aramis Garcia looked raw behind the plate but he did gun two baserunners. I was excited to see John Riley, he looks pretty stiff at the moment. Cain looked good, rooting for him to come back from that illness. I think Augusta is going to be a fun follow.

Where is Gustavo Cabrera? Several links to him being at Augusta, but he might be at extended ST. MLB reports him on Augusta though.

  4. Decent start to the year for the affiliates. Got to watch Duvall's game winner, and listened to a bit of the SJ affair. Those Sqirrels though! We''ve got some top notch athletes in RVA. Big Mac got off to a good start. The guy's a player. It's going to be a great year watching him, at least while he's here. But the star of the night for the Squirrels, and all Giant affiliates, was Tomlinson. Great to see him start where he left off last season. He was on base 5 times, and had 3 hits, including a perfectly executed push bunt down the first base line (https://mobile.twitter.com/Onodacops/status/586380707015995392/video/1). One game does not a season make, but it's a dang good start for Tomlinson, Mac, and the Squirrels!

    1. I was thinking Duffy's push for a 25-man spot might open up a place for Tomlinson in Sacramento. I would honestly rather have him playing there than guys like Triunfel and Ronny Cedeno, but I get that the Giants want to have some MLB experience in AAA.

Speaking of middle infielders, has there been any word on Adrianza's status? I'm not sure how long the waiver process takes, but I would've thought there'd be some kind of announcement by now. Maybe I missed something?

  5. Ya have to wonder if the Giants were thinking Tomlinson when they let EA go. He'll make a great back up IF next year. I like Duffy getting work at 1b too. Duffy and Tomlinson could cover the entire infield so that would be pretty good. Future of Giants OF is looking better with Mac healthy, Carbonell and (hopefully) Parker.
