The Atlanta Braves completed their firesale today by sending star reliever Craig Kimbrel and enigmatic OF Melvin Upton to the Padres for a couple of broken bats. No, actually they got OF's Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, RHP prospect Matt Wisler, OF prospect Jason Paroubeck and the 41'st selection in this year's upcoming draft, a tradable pick, but that's not too much different than a couple of broken bats. Longterm, Wisler and Paroubeck could actually be pretty good gets although there is very little short term help here.
As for the Padres, they get a very expensive shut down closer and take on a very bad contract. They are obviously feeling their oats with their new TV contract. Getting an expensive closer says they expect to contend this year. Upton does not add much, if anything at all. Maybe he'll keep his bro happy and make it more likely the Padres can sign Justin to a longterm deal?
The Padres still have issues in the IF and on defense. It will be interesting to see the impact of those deficiencies vs the selling out for power and pitching.

A buddy of mine who is a Padre fan pointed out to me that their lineup while much improved is too right handed hitting heavy. They have only 1 LHP on their pitching staff which may have to change if they're going to contend.
