Game Wrap 4/7/2015: D'Backs 7 Giants 6

The Giants hitters were gamers in this one, but not game enough to overcome the two 3-run bombs given up by Ryan Vogelsong in under 5 innings of work.  Oh, and they lost Brandon Belt to an injury. Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 3 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .429.  Posey got the game off to a promising start with a 2-run blast in the top of the first inning.  Is it just me, or did it seem like Bruce Bochy was awfully quick to bring in Sanchez to catch and move Buster to 1B on the double switch after initially putting Joaquin Arias at 1B after Belt's injury?

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .375.  Crawford keeps this up and he might have to move further up in the lineup.  Very nice 2 game start for The Craw.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 2.  BA= .167.  Belt's injury came while holding a runner at 1B.  He turned to chase a pop fly down the RF line, almost immediately pulled up with a hop and squatted in the field.  After a discussion with Bochy and the training staff and a trial jog, he came out of the game pointing to his right groin area.  He as not limping as he came off.  I imagine he and the Giants will see how it feels today, but you don't want to try to come back from these too soon.  You don't know how it will react in another game situation this soon.  If Belt hits the DL, I'm going to take a guess and say I think the Giants call up Susac and move Buster to 1B full time, at least until Belt at least until Travis Ishikawa can come off the DL in another week.

Ryan Vogelsong- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 13.50.  Vogey started this game like he was going to shut out the D'Backs as he painted the corners for a couple of called K's and gave up a harmless BB to Paul Goldschmidt.  After giving up a single run in the second inning after Mark Trumbo's leadoff triple, Vogey walked Goldy again in the 3'rd with a runner on 2B on a 3-2 pitch Vogey thought should have been strike 3.  Cleanup hitter David Peralta appeared to have a pretty good idea of what Vogey was going to throw on the first pitch and hammered it deep into the RF bleachers.  Later, in the 5'th inning, Jake Lamb took him deep with 2 runners on base on a very similar looking pitch.  Familiar story for Vogey.  He made some nice pitches, made some horrible ones and looked like he was completely out of gas in the 5'th inning.

With Matt Cain officially hitting the DL and flying back to SF for a second opinion, Chris "Hesto Presto" Heston gets the start tonight in what could be his Opportunity of a Lifetime.  He'll face Jeremy Hellickson who the D'Backs acquired in the offseason from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Padres scored 6 runs in the last 3 innings off the Dodgers bullpen to even their and the Dodgers season records at 1-1.  The Rockies beat the BrewCrew for the second straight game and lead the NL West by 1 game over the rest of the field.

  1. Crawford is starting the season like he did a couple of years ago where he led the team in HR's for like the first month or something. He just needs to avoid those long cold streaks he can go into. Belt's injury is going to be big if he is out for any length of time. You almost have to move Posey to 1B then for any kind of offense. Also saw where they signed Corriea, hope he is not the answer to Peavy if Jake has to go on the DL. The only bright spot is this is all happening early on and it is a long season.

  2. We have to steal a win here and a win there as we start the season.
