Down on the Farm: 8/30/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies stomped the Tacoma Rainiers 9-2:

Juan Perez(CF)- 3 for 5.  BA= .316.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .274.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.95.
Erik Cordier(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.59.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Binghampton Mets 7-6:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 3 for 5.  BA= .268.
Blake Miller(2B)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .318.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .223.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.56.

I think Blake Miller can hit!  Another triple for Angel V!  Does Richmond have some sort of Triples Alley in their ballpark?  Has Angel V gotten himself into better shape? Man, I would love to see him leg one out!

High A  High Desert Mavericks gored the San Jose Giants 10-5:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 3 for 5, 3B, 2 SB(7).  BA= .330.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, HR(12), E(18).  BA= .291.
Brian Ragira(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .261.
Ben Turner(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .296.

Man, is it possible that the Giants have a supremely talented 5-tool player who can actually hit in Carbonell?  Is he the #1 prospect in the Giants system?  Gotta be feeling excited about this one, but he still hasn't hit in the Eastern League.  Maybe he doesn't need to? I think Delfino can hit at the next level, but can he field the 3B position?  Those are Adam Duvall E numbers.  Brian Ragira is hitting .359 over his last 10 games.  His slash line is .300/.355/.523 since the All-Star Break.  Ben Turner is a nice sleeper in the system.

Low A  Charleston River Dogs defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Will Callaway(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .263.
Craig Massoni(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .259.
Randy Ortiz(CF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .269.
Nick Jones(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Luis Castillo(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.07.

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 9-8:

Austin Slater(RF)- 4 for 5, HR(2), SB(7).  BA= .342.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .245.
Travious Relaford(2B-SS)- 3 for 4, 2 HR(3).  BA= .288.

Very promising first pro season for Austin Slater.  Ryder Jones is making a late season push after wearing down in the summer down south.  Travious Relaford has always had the tools. Looks like he's finally found a bat this year.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.  AZL playoffs start today with the Giants opponent TBD.

  2. Doesn't Brian Ragira's season remind you a lot of Tommy Joseph's season in San Jose? I mean he had a ho-hum 1st half, but has been nuts in the second half to have a good overall season. He may be a good sell high guy. Maybe a Ragira and Gary Brown (Modern day Joseph and Schierholtz) can get a Pence-ish type player this winter or at the deadline next year.

Doc, thanks so much for your hard work and daily grind to keep us updated with our system everyday. I hope you know that this is a lifeline for us prospect hounds and is so convenient and insightful with your commentary.

    1. Second this sentiment. I love this community.

    2. I've loved Ragira's bat since he was in HS. I'd like to see what he does next year in AA. He may be a major sleeper in the system. Another thought: He does not have the same value as Joseph because Joseph played a premium position.

    3. Agreed, but just hoping he either has turned a corner or can be a trade chip

  3. We need to call up Carbonell. His defense and speed will be good and we can see if he can handle the pros. It would be great to have him inked in left field to start:

    Pagan
    Carbonell
    Posey
    Panda
    Pence
    Belt
    Panik
    Crawford

That is a very deep line up. I think Duffy goes to AAA, since EA is out of options and Arias has a two year deal. I think Scutaro should do the Giants a solid and retire. BTW, on the Panda thing, we have close to 30mm coming off of payroll after next year. With Panik's emergence, we don't need to spend on 2b. Hopefully, the same is true in LF with Carbonell. There is plenty of money for Belt and Crawford (who, given their seasons, probably would do short term inexpensive deals) and Panda. With the farm system being what it is, Posey maybe moving to 1b etc, no need to lock up either Belt or Crawford. Same is true in the pen (saw a report saying Strickland was getting a look as was Cordier for call ups)

    1. PiLamOso, agree with your end game, but I think that is some wishful thinking on Carbonell making the MLB leap.

I would like to see him in AA jumping to AAA, if he can handle the EL. Resign Morse and then keep Carbonell ready in AAA for when Pagan goes down. This way Blanco/Morse in LF won't be overexposed with Carbonell in CF for Pagan.

So, I believe Carbonell gets there, it just takes some time. I love the 5-tool potential he brings. With MacW coming back, we may have some OF youth, finally.

    2. Yeah, I would give Carbonell some more AB's in the AFL then send him to Richmond for at least half a season then think about calling him up mid-season next year if he is doing well and there is a need.

  4. The 2015 payroll depends a lot on what the team expects to get from the three old men in the rotation. Nobody could have expected the combined contributions of those guys this year. It's been a gift, for which Sabien (and Bochy ) should be properly thanked. Who knows, maybe Petit sticks as the 5th starter. The Giants can wind up with an amazingly cost-effective rotation. That would free up a lot of money for Panda and more.

  5. I like what I see from Carbonell, but he is old and advanced for single a. Far from penciling him into the 2 hole on the major league squad

    1. 23 is not that old for High A ball and do we know he is advanced? The scouting reports I read said he is raw and a bit of a project.

  6. Only four position players on the San Jose roster are younger than Carbonell.

  7. Thanks for a great season of MiLB reports DrB! My only regret is that I didn't get to see the Fresno G's up here in Tacoma. Hope to catch them next year!

I like Monty Shark's notion to resign Morse & continue the Blanco platoon next year, with Danny Cubano in AA/AAA ready to backfill Angel should the need arise.

Great finish in the dog day month of August - now let's roll in September through November!!!

  8. After the successful debuts of Panik and Susac (and emergence of Gillaspie) - management has to ask itself, how many other MLB quality players are in the system? This blog does a good job in analyzing farm talent…..
