I think it's fair to say, at this point, the Giants have been decimated by injuries. There were several additions to the casualty list today including Pablo Sandoval with a shoulder strain, Orlando Cabrera with a groin strain and Eli Whiteside with an apparent concussion, leaving them with a truly pathetic lineup that had no chance against a pretty good MLB pitcher in Wandy Rodriquez. The 'Stros fielded a AAA lineup themselves but their hitters launched a spirited attack against Ryan Vogelsong who didn't pitch as bad as his line looked like but it didn't matter. 1 run was all the 'Stros needed in this one. Key Lines:
Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.47. Vogey obviously wasn't as sharp today as he was in his last start. Still, he didn't pitch that badly and it might have been a different outcome had the Giants been capable of mounting any kind of offensive attack at all as well as fielding the ball better.
In losing, the Giants failed to gain ground on the Dangerous D'Backs who lost to the Braves 4-2. The Giants remained 2.5 games off the pace with Colorado and LA tied for 3'rd place at 11.5 games behind. So, it's still a 2 team race and the Giants remain within fairly easy striking distance. They are going to have to get some people well, and quickly, though.
Madison Bumgarner takes on rookie RHP Jordan Lyles tomorrow. It remains to be seen if the Giants have enough bodies to field a lineup though. We may actually see a pitcher or two playing another position before this is over!

I don't think running Belt, thus making 4 of the 8 non-pitcher lineup slots LH, against Wandy Rodriguez is a particularly good idea.

If OCab is likely to only miss a day or two, I would not put him on the DL. If it looks like longer than 3-4 days, yeah, I'd probably do it.
The non-believers will complain, DrB, I am starting to get that through my head. They just like to complain or are too blind to see. Or just are masochists.
ReplyDeleteThey also like to give up fast. They did the same thing last season, most of them were like this all season. People just need to grow a pair.
The media don't help. They go for the easy story: Giants offense stink. They can't accept that a very good pitcher was on and had a really good game. They encourage these extreme ups and downs in fan sentiment, I get that from reading the news accounts of this game, I get that from listening to the Giants pre-game show, and I love Marty Lurie, but all this down in the mouth stuff is just useless worry.
We have the same pitching. We get that the offense stinks. Hello, whenever you take all your top hitters out of the lineup, you are going to really stink. Take Pujos and Holliday off the Cards, Ethier and Kemp off the Dodgers, they will stink too.
And believing in Sabean/Bochy does not mean that we think the Giants will win it all, every year. It means we think that they have a plan that will work towards the Giants being a competitive team for the playoffs every season for the foreseeable future. I wish people would enjoy the special gift we have now, but it appears people are more OCD than I am, demanding perfection.

ReplyDeleteI pretty much agree with that. The Giants chances for this season are getting a bit shaky, mainly due to the team being decimated by injuries. Long term, though, they continue to be in excellent shape. The future is bright!

ReplyDeleteHowtheheck are they supposed to put a competitive team on the field when they are going down with injuries at a rate of 2-3 per day? Is that somehow Sabean and Bochy's fault? Keep your eye on the road ahead, Bacci. This team is not only still in contention this year(how, I don't really know what with all the injuries), but they are in great shape for the future as well.

ReplyDeleteYou keep saying you give Bochy and Sabean a "pass" this year, but then you just carp constantly about them. Besides, you don't grade a GM year to year. A manager? Maybe, but not a GM. You grade a GM based on the overall health of the organization and the Giants are in good shape for the forseeable future, the current unlucky streak notwithstanding. Just the fact that you would say you think they need a "pass" at all means you've already judged them inadequate and as soon as they fail to repeat as champions, you'll ratchet it up from carping to calling for them to be fired, which you are already doing from time to time anyway. So, don't go claiming you are giving them a pass when you obviously are not.

ReplyDeleteIn any case, the pitching alone is worth rooting for, plus Sandoval. What is wrong with a winning team only 1.5 games out of first?
Give me a break, the Giants would have to trade away a boatload of really good prospects to get the offense back to where it was before it lost Posey and Franchez to injury and Torres and Huff to poor performances.
Luckily, we have picked up a great player in Beltran and useful players in Keppinger and Cabrera, though Orlando has not been useful so far, but they had to try something because Crawford just wasn't hitting. People don't get that trades don't always work, you just take your chances and hope for the best sometimes. But since Cabrera isn't hitting either, Crawford will probably take back the starting job once the September call-ups arrive to help out.
We are missing Posey and Huff had been MIA until recently. Plus, we lost Freddy Sanchez, who was an important cog, and Torres has totally not performed at all. Expecting the Giants to replace all that is not realistic. I think the Giants have done as well as they can given the circumstances and I'm still amazed they pulled the trigger on the Beltran trade.
And I would not want them to trade away all their good prospects just to win this season. They already traded Wheeler, and I will trust their instincts about who to keep and who to trade away.
I want the team to be competitive for a long time, and keeping young, cheap prospects is the way to do with that. Any particular season is a crapshoot to win it all, all you can really hope for is a competitive team that gets into the playoffs, then you take your chances with your team, particularly the pitching, since studies have shown that it is that which wins you championships.
The Giants looks good on all those counts.
