Down on the Farm: 8/21/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Las Vegas 51's 3-2:

Brandon Crawford(SS)- 0 for 4. BA= .275.
Justin Christian(RF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, SB(28). BA= .319.
Max Ramirez(C)- 2 for 4, HR(9). BA= .285.
Matt Yourkin(LHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.59.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Akron Aeros 2-0:

Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.02.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(15). ERA= 3.52.

Not a great K game for Surkamp but he got deeper into the game than usual and pitched a gem.

High A San Jose Giants edged the High Desert Mavericks 4-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 5, 2 Assists(2B, 1B). BA= .320.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 7.1 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.43.

Even when he doesn't have a great day at the plate, Brown helps his team win in other ways. In addition to a pretty sweet set of wheels in the OF, he seems to have a pretty good arm to go with it. Heston has been terrific over his last 9 starts: 5-1, 2.52, 60.1 IP, 17 BB, 61 K's. He also has a GO/AO>2 on the season.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Charleston River Dogs 9-1:

Ryan Lollis(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .313.
Adam Duvall(DH)- 2 for 3, HR(22), BB, HBP. BA= .290.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(6). BA= .224.
Ydwin Villegas(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .194.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 9/3. ERA= 4.18.

I believe this may be Kickham's best appearance as a professional.

Short Season Vancouver Canadians topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 8-7:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB, 3 SB(19). BA= .304.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .345.
Garrett Buechele(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(4). BA= .258.

Payne is hitting .400 over his last 10 games. Buechele is 7 for 16 over his last 4 games.

Rookie AZL Giants defeated the Angels 7-3:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .345.
Stephen Yarrow(1B)- 3 for 5. BA= .286.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.37.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Derek Law(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.93.

5'th round pick Chris Marlowe makes a successful professional debut. Seems like shortstop is going to be a mighty crowded position in the organization next spring. Probably a good problem to have.

DSL No games scheduled. The DSL regular season ended with yesterday's games. The Giants finished 3'rd in their division at 35-32, 9.5 games behind the division winning Cubs2 team. The Giants will not be participating in the DSL playoffs this year.

  1. Thank you for posting a nightly report on the prospects in the organization, I really appreciate it. Makes the prospects easier to follow!

One thing that bums me out is seeing all the talented non-pitching prospects, and knowing that when they're about ready to play in the majors, the organization will screw with them just as they did Belt this season, and Posey in 09. It's a shame the Giants are so awful at handling their position player prospects.

  2. Well, that's the glass half empty way to look at it. I prefer to look at how many homegrown position players have contributed the last two years and how they will contribute in the future. It's very possible that next year's starting lineup will almost certainly have 4, and could have as many as 6, homegrown starters: Posey, Sandoval, Belt, Nate, Crawford and Gary Brown.

If you look around the league, it's actually not the norm for prospects to be inserted into a lineup on opening day and never look back. If you saw Belt on Sunday, it's pretty hard to make a case that he has been harmed by the experiences of this season.

  3. I look at a prospect like Belt, and see the season he had last year, and I am excited. But the one thing that concerns me is that he never faced any serious adversity that put him on his behind. Facing adversity like that is what builds the GREAT players. Until someone faces that, you can never tell if they will be a MLBer.

This year, Belt faced the adversity. YoYo from AAA to MLB. DL stint with an injury that CAN be nagging. Playing a position that is blocked at the MLB level. Through all of this, his overall numbers are still quite good, and he has come up clutch numerous times in the Bigs.

    I like this kid.

  4. To take my previous post one step further, Brown HAS faced that this year. He faced 2 obstacles, and appears to have come out from behind them...

    1) Not getting any promotions through the year, even though he was CRUSHING his level.

    2) Falling into a decent slump mid year (because of the non-promotion???).

He has since come out of his slump and is again hitting like a top flight prospect. I have full confidence that he will do fine in Richmond next year (his hitting style does not strike me as a style that will be hampered by the EL) and should be up BEFORE September '12 and probably hold an OF slot before the end of the year.

Then we STILL have Panik, Peguero, Susac, Oropesa, Joseph, Duvall, etc, etc, etc.

And we are supposed to have a shallow system??

  5. I do think facing adversity on the way up is a positive. Of course there are exceptional players who are so good they are never challenged until they hit the big leagues but those players are exceedingly few and far between.

Buster is probably such a player so it didn't matter that he never had to endure whatever it is that causes offensive players to tank in the Eastern League. I would like to see Brown get at least half a season in AA before he goes to AAA or to the majors. I think AA might do Hector Sanchez some good too. I mean if they can't fight through the EL and eventually adjust, how are they going to make it in the majors?

  6. I like the season that Tommy Joseph has put together. He started off hot in the beginning, cooled off in the middle to around a .230 BA, and is finishing red hot at the end. Last I checked he hit his 20 hr and now has 85 rbis and a .270 BA. Managers around the Cal League also voted him the best defensive catcher in the league. Not bad for a player who was a question mark to stay at catcher. He has faced adversity and has made great strides as a player this season.

  7. Adrianza sure has turned it up a notch.

  8. Very excited about Joseph. Adrianza has show some promise with the bat recently, but is still a work in progress offensively.
