Down on the Farm: 8/20/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Las Vegas 51's 8-7:

Andres Torres(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .250.
Brandon Crawford(SS)- 0 for 5. BA= .292.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .292.
Justin Christian(RF)- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP, 2 SB(27). BA= .315.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Akron Aeros 8-6:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 1 for 1, BB, 2 SF, SB(7). BA= .300.
Roger Kieschnick(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(16). BA= .260.
Wendell Fairley(LF)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .268.
Skyler Stromsmoe(SS)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .268.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(14). BA= 3.68.

High A High Desert Mavericks blanked the San Jose Giants 2-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 3, HBP, SB(47). BA= .321.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .306.
Tom Vessella(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.75.
Michael Main(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.65.
Addison Proszek(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

I believe this was Vessella's best appearance as member of the Giants organization, by a fair margin. Proszek gets the promo from the AZL. He's a big RHP drafted out of Gonzaga in 2009 and hadn't shown much before this year.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets beat the Charleston River Dogs 6-3:

Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.90.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, Save(7). ERA= 1.35.

Lollis, Mazzola and Weeks had 2 hits each. Duvall, Harris and Weeks had a double each.

Short Season Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-4 in 11 innings:

Shawn Payne(CF)- 2 for 3, BB, SB(16). BA= .291.
Cameron Lamb(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.26.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.38.

Payne has kind of gone unnoticed but has put together a fine first professional season.

Rookie AZL Giants topped the Indians 7-5:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 3 for 5, SB(8). BA= .339.
Eric Sim(DH)- 2 for 4, 3B, SF. BA= .344.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 7.50.

DSL Giants downed the Nationals 3-1:

Nothing to see here.

  1. Gary Brown went through a little slump but seems to be out of it. I am cautiously optomistic about him thinking he will be our leadoff hitter in SF soon. Who knows, if they don't tender Torres next year, maybe he will get a shot to compete for it. Like what I am seeing from lil Bochy. Is he for real? Sim seems to have a little power but can hit for average. Hoping to see him in San Jose next year along with Ben Thomas and Joe Panik. Did Jorge Bucardo have season ending surgery? I was hoping he would have a good year but haven't seen him. He was one of our top pitching prospects. I would like to say our power hitters Duvall and Dominguez could turn the corner but I think they are organizational unless they can play another position with Panda hitting well.

  2. Agree on Brown. I am cautiously optimistic that Brown is the CF of the future for the Giants. He may need another full year of seasoning, but I think he will get a chance to win a job out of spring training, although the Belt experience may make the Giants a bit shy about handing out jobs to kids who have been rushed out of spring training.

Melonhead Jr. is indeed for real. If he stays on the bullpen track, he should be a fast riser. I think they've been cautious with him this year because it's his first season post TJ surgery.

I assume Bucardo had TJ surgery.

  3. I agree with DrB about Brown. I would note that Belt last season was promoted to AAA already but Brown is spending the season down in Advanced A, so there is no way he gets a real chance at CF until 2013.

I can see Peguero getting a look-see next season in CF in spring training, but expect that Torres will be back and probably battling Darrun Ford for starting CF.

I expect Huff to still be around playing 1B, which would place Belt as starting LF and Schierholtz as starting RF, plus the Giants probably will sign a free agent to compete for a starting spot.

I was hoping the Giants could sign Beltran to a one year contract, and his malingering injury plus poor play so far with the Giants are giving me hope that he and Boras will agree to a relatively cheap 2012 contract ($8-12M) where he can play and show off what he can do and get a mega contract for 2013. He might still kick the tires on such a short contract if teams are scared away by his hand injury's slow recovery, given his history of other ailments that prevented him from playing.

I love Ross for what he did for us in 2010 and might do for us in 2011, but I just don't see him in our long-term picture. Maybe if he's done making the free agent rounds and got no dance partner, he can sign a one year contract for $4-5M and be one of our OF.

Notice I didn't mention Rowand. I don't see him starting, but he will be given the chance to start if we don't have any proven CF option like Beltran. Heck, who knows, maybe he can win the job, he did great for us to start the season in his first two seasons, 2008-2009, before fading away the final two months.

However, if he's not hitting at all during the first month or two of the season, then I can see the Giants finally letting him go.

There is also the possibility that he could be traded for another team's albatross, like when we traded Edgardo for Finley. Nobody I can think of that fits that description right now, though.

  4. What about Rowand for Zambrano plus $3 M from the Cubs. Zambrano is scheduled to make $18 M next year minus Rowand's 12 M minus $3 M from the Cubs and the Giants get Zambrano as a #5 starter for a net of $3M. I'd take Zambrano for $3 M!
