Down on the Farm: 8/1/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Reno Aces 9-7:

Justin Christian(RF)- 4 for 5, 3 2B, 3 SB(18). BA= .345.
Emmanuel Burriss(2B)- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB, 2 SB(18). BA= .363.
Brett Pill(1B)- 2 for 2, HR(22), BB, SF. BA= .322.

At age 31, Christian probably won't get his shot at the majors, but he's played well enough this year to deserve it. I think he could help some team as a reserve OF. He's got speed, is a good fielder and has a little power. Looks like the Brett Pill at 2B experiment was more out of necessity than design. He's pretty much back to 1B now. Maybe the experience gives him just whiff of versatility that might get someone's attention.

AA No games scheduled in the Eastern League.

High A San Jose Giants edged the Inland Empire 66'ers 2-1 in 10 innings:

Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 3 K's, BS(1), W(2-0). ERA= 0.50.

Tommy Joseph hasn't played in several games and the Giants have added Jesus Navarro as an extra catcher to the roster.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-3:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 1 for 4, 3B, BB, SB(31). BA= .266.

DSL Giants pounded the Phillies 12-2:

Fernando Pujadas(C, 19 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(2). BA= .290.
Alexis Almeida(1B, 18 yo)- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .245.

  1. Tweet on Joseph by SJ announcer: "Tommy Joseph returns to the lineup today after missing last 4 games with a minor shoulder injury and then the flu."

One possibility is that Pill is a project for 2012. There is almost no way to fit him on the 40-man roster for 2011. It would require cutting someone of value, and why do that when Pill is not a clear upgrade on anyone.

However, there should be a lot of open space on the 40-man after the season. Probably gone are Cabrera, DeRosa, Tejada, Beltran, Burrell, and one of Whiteside/Stewart. Possibly gone include Edlefsen, Hinshaw, Fontenot (Crawford could take role), Gillaspie (out of options). Also, Lopez and Affledt are free agents as well.

And there is the possibility that if the Giants pay 60-75% of their remaining salaries, other teams might take Rowand and/or Zito off the Giants hands.

At that point, lots of open space in 40-man, Pill would be very valuable, playing great 1B defense while being capable of sliding over to 2B, and hitting for a lot of power, while also able to work a walk as necessary. He probably could play some LF as well. Very handy off the bench.

  2. Yea. This off season will be interesting with a mini-blowup bound to happen. I think that if the FO is serious about winning (and I 100% believe that they are) than there is little chance Zito OR RoRo are on the 40 next season.

  3. OGC, I like the way you're thinking regarding Pill. Man, when you age out of the prospect track, it is near impossible to get back on the minds of MLB front office guys.

Guys like Pill, or there's a 1B on the Cubs AAA affiliate, Bryabn LaHair. LaHair (who is 28) has put up solid numbers at AAA the past 3 years, including a .330 average this year with 29 HRs. And the Cubs didn't move Pena at the Deadline? Their GM said that would have had no one to play 1B. What???

Anyway, I hope you are right about Pill figuring more into the Giants' plans rather than another FA signing.

  4. I think once they left Zito out of the postseason roster, they should have traded him last off-season. He was already struggling with confidence, and being left out of the roster was a huge blow to his confidence. I am not saying he should have been included, but I don't see how you can expect him to do well this year after that blow.

The same thing applies to not penciling him for Sunday at first, and then making him pitch. Yea, he should perform no matter what, since he is a professional, but man could you crush his confidence more?
