Down on the Farm: 8/17/2011

AAA Round Rock Express blanked the Fresno Giants 1-0 in rare PCL pitching duel:

Nothing to see here. Grizzlies managed just 4 hits. Not sure why Kown only pitched 1 inning.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Bowie Baysox 8-5:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .303.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 4, HR(9). BA= .258.
Jackson Williams(C)- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .250.
Ryan Verdugo(LHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.34.
Hector Correa(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.67.

Peguero's average is climbing. Dominant long relief outing by Correa.

High A San Jose Giants outslugged the Lake Elsinore Storm 11-6:

Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .294.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 3 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .266.
Tommy Joseph(DH)- 1 for 5, HR(19), BB. BA= .270.
Alex Burg(C)- 3 for 5, HR(9). BA= .291.
Luke Anders(1B)- 2 for 5, HR(12). BA= .255.
Craig Wescott(RHP)- 6 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.08.
Ari Ronick(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.40.
Michael Main(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.93.

Joseph has now hit 7 dingers in his last 7 games. His line over his last 10 games is .409/.438/.955. If that doesn't make BA's Hot Sheet, I don't know what would. Burg is hitting just .244 over his last 10 but with a .340 OBP and a .512 SLG%.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-5:

Robert Haney(SS)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SB(4). BA= .237.
Adam Duvall(DH)- 2 for 4, HR(21), BB. BA= .286.
Ryan Lollis(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .310.

I think Duvall still leads the organization in HR's although Tommy Joseph is catching up fast.

Short Season Vancouver Canadians topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-1:

Stephen Shackleford(RHP)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.35.

Rookie AZL Brewers defeated the Giants 3-1:

Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.08.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.23.

A couple of high ceiling arms. The Giants challenge is to develop them.

DSL Phillies beat the Giants 2-1. Nothing to see here.

Brett Pill says, "Will SOMEONE please notice me!!!"

Not that Pill is any kind of answer for the Giants, but I feel for the guy. Having a real solid year at AAA for an organization that has been decimated by injuries, and he probably won't get a September call up.

It's hell be an organizational guy.

  2. Yeah, with Aubrey Huff signed up for 1 more year and Brandon Belt in the organization, not much room for Pill, huh?

  3. Just discovered your Blog, and I want to say "Thanks." You do a great job of providing a snapshop of what went on on the Giants farm.

  4. Second base is a black hole of offense right now with Tejada and Fontenot and Burris. I don't see and danger in putting someone like Zito or DeRosa on the 60 day and letting the kid show his wares. He hadn't repeated too many levels and also showed power in AA when in Connecticut with 22 dingers..

Must be something that his coaches don't think will translate to the bigs, but i'd wager that he can do better than a .220 clip that these other guys are running out there and maybe he could provide just a little spark...

Thanks for the great blog and discussions dr b.

  5. Hello Doc -
Have you seen Brett Pill play? See him play 2nd base? Could he be a Jeff Kent type, barely adequate defensively but with a big bat for the position? If so, wouldn't he offer more than every Giants 2nd baseman other than Freddy Sanchez?

  6. Promote a sub-900 OPS 26 YO hitter to the majors? Here's a list of recent 26 YO (or so) PCL hitters with OPS near but below 900 OPS:

    David Freese
    Jesus Guzman
    Bryan LaHair
    Joe Gaetti
    Tug Hulett
    Eric Patterson
    Jason Perry

Only one good hitter, in Freese, the others have done nothing in the majors. Good hitters with a chance of doing anything in the majors usually hits at least 950 OPS, if not over 1000 by the time they are 26, and they aren't hitting under 900 OPS. Trying Pill as a starter at 2B smacks of desperation, when there is no need to.

Since June 5th, Tejada has hit .298/.342/.452/.794, he was one of the Giants hottest hitters until he hit the DL. He was an important cog of the Giants offense when it averaged 3.9 RS per game in early July, before the Beltran trade. That's over 3 wins better offensively than Crawford, and I don't think his defense is that much better than Tejada.

It is just too little, too late. If he did this at age 24 instead he would probably have been good enough to make a splash in the majors. Sub-900 OPS, not so much, he's borderline and it is against all odds that he makes the majors and hit OK. On top of that, he would have to field a position he's not that good at, if not bad. No thanks.

  7. Hey, thanks for the comments, everybody!

I have not seen Brett Pill play 2B, but from the few comments I've read about it, I gather the Giants don't think he is capable of fielding the position at the MLB level. Fonty got 3 hits the other night so I'm not sure it's fair to call it a "black hole". Hopefully Kepp won't be out too much longer.
