I you had told me before the game that it would feature home runs by Cody Ross and Aubrey Huff as well as a triple by Carlos Beltran, I'd have felt pretty confident in calling it a win for the Giants with Matt Cain on the mound. In reality, the 2 HR's were solo shots and Matt Cain had one horrific inning and the Dangerous D'Backs crept another game closer in the NL West standings. Key Lines:
Cody Ross- 2 for 4, HR(8). BA= .252. Ross is not a perfect leadoff batter by any stretch, but he does have a .343 OBP against his .252 BA so he does take walks and sees pitches, so he might be the best option left on the team at this point.
Carlos Beltran- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .283.
Aubrey Huff- 1 for 4, HR(10). BA= .240.
Matt Cain- 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.10. 5 of the hits came in the horrific 6'th inning that Cainer failed to complete. 4 of those hits were groundballs that found holes through the infield so you could make a pretty strong case that Cainer just ran into a freak of bad luck. He got BABIPed! Perfect example of why there are advantages to being a flyball pitcher, especially if you can keep your HR rate down.
The Dangerous Ones are now just 1 game behind the Giants in the NL West and pounding on the door. Tim Lincecum tries to be the stopper tonight against Daniel Hudson, a pretty good pitcher himself. Not looking forward to a future with Trevor Bauer and Jarrod Parker added to this D'Backs rotation.
