Hot Stove Update: Dodgers and Braves Swap Toxic Assets

I can't say I saw this one coming, but I probably should have.  The Dodgers re-acquired OF Matt Kemp from the Braves for 1B Adrian Gonzalez, LHP Scott Kazmir, RHP Brandon McCarthy, IF Charlie Culberson and $4.5 M in cash.  So, this is what we've come to.  None of the players involved in this trade really mean anything.  Both Kemp and Gonzalez are expected to be released on Monday. The entire purpose of the trade to for the Braves to use their CBT cushion to take on money the Dodgers owe this year for Kemp's money that is spread out over 2 years which gets the Dodgers under the CBT threshold.  The Braves do say they have uses for McCarthy and Culberson, but really this is about shuffling contracts.  It reminds me of 2008 when banks were trying to sell of toxic assets.

Maybe Bobby Evans can use this trade as a template for unloading Denard Span and Hunter Pence's toxic contracts?

  1. So...Ellsbury is toxic for NYY 3yrs, Span/Pence toxic in SF for 1 year - could that be the way to pry loose Clint Frazier for RF and use Ellsbury for defensive upgrade in CF. Would he be an upgrade in CF as place holder for Duggar? He used to be fast. Parker/Slater for LF. Anyway, that frees up some 3B/RP money.

  2. If Ellsbury is a defensive upgrade in CF, then use Duggar! Or Hernandez. Don't take on 3 years of problems for 1!
Clint Frazier? Why is he worth a double latte mocha? NY hype?
Eat the contracts for Span and Pence: combined they can play LF for a year.
Trading Moore for spare change is one thing, p-ssing it away for Jay Bruce or Jacob Ellsbury is the short-sighted darkness!

  3. I'm all for going Duggar or Hernandez in CF and Slater in RF - that doesn't seem to be the thinking in the Giants FO though as Duggar and Slater are not 'proven' power bats? How about Longoria at 3B - there's your extra pop in the lineup. I think he's on <20mil per year through 2023, so less than Stanton would have been. Not sure who Tampa would want for him, and SF might have to dump Samardjiza's contract and pick up Tillman for a one year bounce back in a pitcher-friendly park to keep it all under the CBT.
