Hot Stove Update: Winter Meetings Day 2- Still Waiting for the Giants to Make A Move

Day 2 of the Winter Meetings felt like a continued hangover from the Stanton/Ohtani misadventures. Henry Schulman reported that Denard Span was one of the players who would have gone to the Marlins for Stanton to help keep the Giants within hailing distance of the CBT threshold.  Bobby Evans said that several teams are interested enough in Giants prospects to ask about taking bad contracts as payment.  He named Chris Stratton as one such prospect.  Evans indicated he was not inclined to accept a trade like that at this time, but he apparently was ready to in the proposed Stanton trade. Baggs reports that Heliot Ramos is asked about in virtually every trade proposal.  The Giants are also rumored to have made a strong offer for CF Billy Hamilton but a deal does not appear to be close.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants may have avoided paying a $20 M posting fee for a broken pitcher as it was revealed that Shohei Ohtani has a partial UCL tear and received platelet-rich plasma injections in October.  I wonder if that came out during the the meetings with the 7 "finalist" teams?

*********************************************************************************

The run on relief pitchers continued as Bryan Shaw signed with a the Rockies for 3 years/$27 M.  Tommy Hunter Signed with the Phillies for 2 yrs/$18 M.  37 yo RHP Pat Neshek gets 2 years/$16.25 M from the Phillies. Wow!  And just this morning, it was announced that Jake McGee will re-sign with the Rockies.  Terms are unknown at this time.

*********************************************************************************

The trend of buying young talent by taking on bad contracts continued as the Padres took Chase Headley and his $13 M off the Yankees hands and also got RHP Bryan Mitchell in the deal.  Jabari Blash goes to the Yankees as a near non-factor.

*********************************************************************************

2 pitchers who will likely sit out most or all of 2017 post-TJ surgery were signed to 2 years contracts with an eye toward 2018.  Michael Pineda signed with the Twins for 2 yrs/$10 M with $2 M in 2017 and $8 M in 2018 with $3 M in incentives, presumably for 2018.  The Cubs signed LHP Drew Smyly to a similar deal.

*********************************************************************************

The market seems to be quite soft for the higher priced free agents, as it should be.  What moves do you think the Giants will make today?

None. I think we're not loaded enough to get Ozuna (I think the Cards get him) and I don't think the Marlins will trade Yelich as he has far more years of control and could be a rebuilding centerpiece for the Marlins. I think the talk about CarGo being a Giant is talk that should be avoided as he's a Coors Field creation with brutal road splits in BA, OBP & Power.

  2. Re: Hamilton, let's face it, it's hard to sell a trade based on prospects coming from a Farm System in the bottom quarter of the MLB. The prospects may even be decent but there's the perception based on the overall health of the Giant's farm system...

  3. Ozuna to the Cards. Announced about 1:30PM EST. Details haven't been released as of yet. But the tentative details tell me the Giants weren't in competition as it's two top pitching prospects and either Grichuk or Piscotty.

  4. The more I hear names mentioned, and the more I look at the Giants roster, the more it becomes clear to me that the risks associated with trying to build a team that can "contend" in 2018 are pretty daunting. The number of things that will have to go right for this team to contend make for a long, improbable list. The worst part of all this is if good fortune (some would argue exceptionally good fortune) does not befall the Giants in 2018, the path to recovery going forward becomes long and bumpy......an ugly three to four year process.

Should the front office decide to trade minor league assets for good, but not great players, the Giants will likely finish in the middle of the pack in 2018, and then what? Don't do it. Please, don't do it.

If you are willing to take a hard, honest look at the Giants roster, there are only two options that make any sense:

    1) Forgo trading young talent and resist the urge to take on salary, and do everything possible to shed salary heading in to next off-season. Then hope 1) Duggar, Arroyo, Beede, Shaw and Stratton continue to develop, 2) hope Cueto, Belt, Panik and Crawford rebound, 3) hope Posey and Bumgarner stay healthy and 4) there is a premium free agent ready to sign for big dollars and come to AT&T

    or

    2) Swallow hard and trade Bumgarner (Yankess would be a good match) and possibly Posey (the Braves and all their great young arms would be a good fit, with Posey being a Georgia boy, and all), and begin a full rebuild. With the assets that the Giants have in the low minors, along with the assets these trades would bring and the picks in the 2018 draft, the turnaround could be quick.

Blasphemy, I know. But, I see real trouble if the Giants go all-in to contend in 2018.

  5. Why haven't they listened to you, Dr B? Mac W for Solarte 3B, Beede for Brett Phillips CF. Sign Hundley. Maybe make a swap for Clint Frazier NYY, or Domingo Santana straight up for Samardjiza. Sit back then and enjoy the rest of the meetings, see if a relief pitcher falls on the floor for you to pick up. Live nicely under the CBT, maybe one or two of the kids gets hot at AAA, but keep the picks and draft a bunch of phenoms. If you're still in it in July, trade for whatever help you need.

    1. It's easy to draw up those trades on a blog. It's whole different story when you are trying to pry a trade out of another GM who is every bit as savvy as you are.

  6. The Cards, are going to trade Piscotty to the A's really. The Marlins, are activity shopping CY. That's a lot of quality OF's that would look good in a Giants, ugh. Get Dyson, over Hamalton.

  7. None. They were willing to bust thru their budget for Stanton, but now they are not. Yet Evans has said they are staying away from trades to shed salary and lower payroll. They've said they want to compete but won't mortgage their future, rightfully so, to get the help they need via trades. So it sounds like the FO is lacking direction right now in my opinion. Don't think fans are happy with Bobby Evans right now, hope they make a move to better themselves soon. Go Giants!

  8. I really think it's rebuild time. I mean we are now losing to the A's now. They are going to get Piscotty from the cards. I mean we can't even shop at a pawn shop (Scott bora's words) i was, looking at a stat, that the Giants, are 90-160 since 2016 Allstar break. There is not going to be a quick around and think we are going to magically compete. We really need to rebuild. This is a pivotal time in Evans career, they need to make smart trades and draft well.

  9. 2 options (of course there are more):
    1. The Giants want to keep butts in the seats. Trim the edges. Get a fielding CFer but not for "sure thing" prospects. No significant additions to payroll. Rely on the pitching. It ought to be good.
    2. Otherwise: sell off 2 of 3 of the high end SPs, or 3 of 4. Or all 4. If you sell off the G's greatest asset, the SPs, let it fly! Nothing is sacred. Tough it out for attendance, BUT get future value, not a lost 2017-2018.
Option 1: we'll all know by July if this working. If not, shift to option 2.
Option 2: not sure where the all the future pitching is going to come from, but by the time the rest of the team is ready, today's pitching is old and tired. Draft pitching! Staring with Rule 5. jp

    1. Bumgarner should right now be worth someone's top 2 pitching prospects and top fielding prospect. Cueto needs to go 9-1 and then they'll be throwing prospects at the Giants for him. Samardjiza should be worth Clint Frazier NYY OF right now, plus an average prospect. Moore isn't worth much at the moment but if he throws well out of the gate he'll be worth something by July. If they round up the top pitching and/or fielding prospect from about 4 teams plus keep their current AAA prospects PLUS draft well, they can contend in 2019 and never be in this empty farm position again. Belt should also get hot and then sold, Posey can just be player/manager after Bochy retires. Go Giants!

    2. LOL Posey -- player manager! Earn his keep in his declining years.
Been a long while but with a strong bench coach it might work. They used to do it to save money, that's not a motivation these days. Let him try when Boch is getting one of his procedures. jp

  10. @jp, I would like to see the giants use the rule 5 draft to actually get a decent prospect. Use, the real draft on a postional player Seth beer, jered K, and use the higher picks on pitching, since it is a pitching strong draft, and pitcher's come to SF, anyways. Your thoughts, JP.

  11. The Giants want to build a contender in 2018 but they still want to stay under the tax and not trade away their best prospects. Unless the FO can be creative juggling their roster this offseason,it's next to impossible to do. The off season is still young so hopefully the FO can figure out what direction they need to go to avoid the losing lasting longer then it should.

  12. I'll be happy if they sign Todd Huntley again. Great backup to Buster.

Any thoughts on who they should pick in the rule 5 tomorrow?

  13. i think scott boras might have overvalued his players, gms are real reluctant to get suckered into a bad contract they can't afford, especially in this new cba.

  14. @LG, I like some of the young catchers, and koi Stewart. I also believe that the Giants, should pick a player for another team, and see if it will fetch a higher prospect via trade. I definitely would not pass on the #2 pick, some team in MLB, will see value in it. Your thoughts LG

  15. Well so much for trading prospects if we only have one that anyone wants and he's untouchable - now they'll have to come home and try to buy Dyson, Bruce and TFrazier and shed salary somehow to stay under the CBT?

    1. frazier is likely heading back to the yankees which means an arroyo/sandoval platoon at third becomes a real possibility. bruce wants too long of a contract which means realistically they are probably gonna have to go after cameron maybin or jon jay as bridge options in the outfield
