The Giants signed Nick Hundley to a 1 year/$2.5 M contract. Hundley was one of the few bright spots in last year's debacle. Re-signing him may have been the single most important offseason task for the Giants. He was good enough last year to make Bruce Bochy comfortable with moving Buster over to 1B more often keeping his legs fresh as the season wore on. You could say it was Hundley who enabled Buster to avoid a mid-late season slump and finish with the second best BA of his career. He was popular in the clubhouse and won the Willie Mac Award. More importantly, the Giants had zero, zero in-house options to replace him. The only clearly better catcher on the market was Alex Avila who is looking for at least a platoon gig. Giants had to get Hundley back in a Giants uniform and they got it done without committing to more than a 1 year contract. Good job, Bobby!

Follow up from yesterday's post: I'm OK with Todd Frazier, Eduardo Nunez, Yangervis Solarte, Chase Headley or Sandoval/Arroyo for 3B. Just say no to Moustakas and Longoria.

How about Bumgarner and Pence (and Span?) for Donaldson, Pillar, and Dominic Leone?
ReplyDeleteBumgarner and Span to Cubs for Bryant and Almora.
ReplyDeleteApparently, you spoke too soon. ESPN is reporting (8:58 am pst) Giants traded for Longoria. The Rays receive Christian Arroyo, Matt Krook, Stephen Woods and Denard Span.
ReplyDeleteIt seems Longoria just got traded to the Giants for Span, Arroyo, Matt Krook, and Stephen Woods. Your thoughts on this?
ReplyDeleteBreaking, Giants get longoria for Arroyo, woods,Span throw in contract one other Doc, your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteLongoria is ours. Shame about Arroyo though. Well, at least it gets rid of Span and clears the way for Pence and some of the kids, all of whom were likely to be valuable and play well in LF than Span.
ReplyDeleteDid this end the Pablo Sandoval experiment?
ReplyDeleteGiants are playing for 2018 afterall, there won't be a Bumgarner trade before July 31st!
Wow, they must have really given up on Arroyo. I know we have a couple of guys at 3b and maybe Hinjosa can move over, but seems like we're really taking a risk here that Longoria can last 3 years or more. Not so much worried about the rest of the package, but it does seem to be counter to the getting the comp under control. Also, you have to think about whether you trade MadBum now, since there isn't much reason to trade for Longoria unless you want to compete now. Maybe you could trade him in 2019?
ReplyDeletePerhaps they didn’t like his effort coming back from injury.
DeleteSounds like Jay Bruce is down to the Astros and Giants.
ReplyDeleteApparently he would accept a 4 year deal.

Jay Bruce does not fit the Giants! A horrible RFer, a LH batter, strikes out 25%, and his power is unlikely to play well in AT&T.
ReplyDeleteIf Longoria was possibly a good bet, Bruce is probably a bad bet. That combo could be a death knell.
That would be hard to take.
