Game Wrap 4/8/2017: Padres 2 Giants 1

This game was not as close as the final score would seem to indicate.  Madison Bumgarner's 8-inning CG QS went to waste as the Giants offense never solved the sinker-slider combo of Padres SP, Jhoulys Chacin.  A 9'th inning rally was too little, too late.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence RF- 0 for 4, 3 K's.  BA= .261.  Pence epitomized the Giants struggles against Chacin.  Whether it was the odd start time or whether he just had exceptional stuff tonight was hard to tell, but it was obvious from his first AB that Pence was just not picking up the breaking ball.  The rest of the Giants lineup was doing little better with Buster Posey, in particular, having one very awkward looking AB.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  It took Bumgarner 3 innings to get settled into a rhythm.  He dominated the later innings, but the Giants hitters were never able to get untracked.

The Giants record dropped to 1-5.  On the postgame show, they  reviewed prior seasons when they went 1-5 to open the season.  Let's just say it was not a encouraging list.  The Pesky Padres evened their record at 3-3 tied with the Dodgers who lost to the Rockies 4-2 in a Clayton Kershaw start.  The Rockies are 5-1, tied for first place with the Dangerous D'Backs who clobbered the Indians 11-2.

  1. It's interesting that 3 other teams that are supposed to be good and opened the week on the road are a combined 3 wins and 13 losses. They are the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Mariners. Bottom line this week is showing that the Giants need to tighten up their pitching and defense to win games. Their track record is their defense should improve, their starting pitching should be fine, but not sure about the bullpen after Melancon. I was surprised that they didn't bring in another lefty reliever in the off season to go with Will Smith. Maybe they were high on Osich and Okert. But they sent Okert down despite a good spring which tells me that maybe they are not high on Okert.Hope that Bochy can sort out the roles in the bullpen, don't need a repeat of last year.
