Game Wrap 4/6/2017: D'Backs 9 Giants 3

There are a couple of ballparks where Jeff Samardzija should probably not pitch and one of them is the D'Backs lair.  Jake Lamb finished off a 3-dinger barrage with a 3-run shot in the 6'th inning and the route was on as the Giants dropped their 3'rd come-from ahead loss of the 4-game series.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 0 for 4.  BA= .125.  Gorkys is 0 for 9 in his last 2 CF starts.  If Bochy is going to continue to play him, and he probably does not have much choice until Denard Span is healthy enough to play again, he might want to think about dropping him in the order.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.

Aaron Hill 2B-LF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .333.  Hill started at 2B over Joe Panik against the LHP Robbie Ray, then slid out to LF when Panik entered the game later.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 10.13.  The K's tell you the stuff was there.  Samardzija is dinger prone and let's face it, this is a bad ballpark!

Hunter Strickland RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.  Strick is one of the few Giants to pitch well in this series.

Ty Blach LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 16.20.  Bobby Evans should not panic until the Giants get out of this horrible environment, but he might want to start checking his contact numbers for Rick Hahn to ask about Dan Jennings.  Has Paco Rodriguez been claimed by anyone?

The Giants dropped their record to 1-3.  They share last place in the NL West with the Padres.  The Rockies topped the BrewCrew while the Dodgers pounded the Pathetic Padres so the D'Backs, Dodgers and Rockies share first place at 3-1.

The Giants finally get out of Dodge and move on to San Diego to take on the Pathetic Ones with Matt Cain making a critical start, both for him and the Giants.

  1. Blach wasn't helped by BAD defense in left by Hill. A left fielder he is not.

  2. Hunter Strickland on paternity leave Okert should be called up we need another lefty

  3. Sheesh, what a downer way to start a season. My observations are similar to yours:

    1) Bullpen looks suspicious to me. We might be able to keep a lead with our top guys, but staying close through the middle innings in a tight game is going to be a challenge. Seemed like when Shark left and we were down 3-5 I already had the sinking feeling it was over. Sure hope Okert and Osich can get their acts together - we need some legitimate lefty arms in the pen.

    2) Aaron Hill & Chris Marrero are clunkers in LF. Terrible. Hill had one of the slowest breaks I've ever seen in the late innings last night and ended up having to dive and missed. Marrero looks overmatched at the plate too, which doesn't bode well for him. He better get his act together or he's on his way to Dan Uggla 2.0 quickly here.

    3) If there was ever a game to get yourself feeling better it's the Padres #5 starter at Petco with a fly ball pitcher (Cain). Hopefully these guys can get some frustrations out tonight and Melancon can shut 'er down quietly to get back on track.

  4. I think Gearin and Rodriguez are on the bubble already. Same with Marrero, good spring training story but Uggla is a good comp. I think Hill hangs on a little longer if they replace Marrero with someone who can legitimately handle LF. Still some tweaking to do with this team and with the Dodgers having the team they have, we can't afford to get too far behind, even early on.

    1. This is beginning to look like 2016 post All Star.
Don't know but Bochy has lost his "feel" for the right move. Of course, he isn't helped by the likes of Hill, Marerro, Hernandez, Blach, and half the bull pen. To think, 4 games in with one legitimate save opportunity and the 60 million dollar man blows it!
Are we praying for Cain like the Braves of the late 40's? Oh yeah, that was Rain, not Cain!
Rain, Cain, Sain, Hill is a genuine Loser!

  5. Matt Cain to start the 2nd inning, per gameday visualization:
    1) 87mph fastball down the exact middle of the plate, swinging strike 1.
    2) Slider in the dirt, ball 1.
    3) 88mph fastball on the inside-half of the plate and right at the belt, HR #2 on the day for Padres' leadoff hitter Manual Margot.

Wow. There are bp pitchers who wish they had half the skill Cain has to tee hitters up. That's really disappointing. His career is over, and I don't think Bobby Evans will be blind much longer..

  6. Bring back Tommy!!!
