Game Wrap 4/29/2017: Padres 12 Giants 4

After the Giants took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 5'th inning, I decided to take the dog for a walk.  When I returned about 30 minutes later, the game was still in the top of the 6'th inning and the Padres were leading 9-3.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt LF/1B- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .264.  The hard single up the middle came with the bases loaded in the 5'th inning to give the Giants the lead.

Conor Gillaspie 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .207.  Gillaspie ignited the 3-run rally in the 5'th with a leadoff double down the LF line.

Eduardo Nunez RF/LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .253.  So far there have not been any Nunez disasters in the OF, at least that I am aware of.

Matt Cain RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 2.30.   Cain had a great curveball going which he paired up with a nice sinking two-seam FB to get K's and GB's.  Bochy made the right move to pinch-hit for him with Kelby who kept the bottom of the 5'th going which led to a 2-run lead.  Unfortunately, the bullpen did not do it's job.

Chris Stratton- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 13.50.  I watched Stratton's first couple of pitches before taking the dog for a walk.  He looked fine with a FB that hit 93 MPH on the TV gun.  Whahoppened?

Neil Ramirez RHP- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, 2 HR.  ERA= 13.06.  By the time Ramirez came in the game, Bochy just wanted to preserve the rest of his bullpen so let the carnage continue.

Cory Gearrin RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.08.  Gearrin's immediate future availability was sacrificed just to get the Giants out of this game.

The Loss dropped the Giants back not last place in the NL West, 7 games behind the Rockies to topped the D'Backs 7-6.  The Rockies lead the Snakes by 1.5 games.  The 3'rd place Dodgers hit 3 consecutive HR's in the 9'th inning to beat the Phillies 6-5 and remain 3 games behind the Rockies.  The Pesky Padres are in 4'th place, 6.5 games behind.

Ty Blach goes for a series win today facing lefty Clayton Richard.

  1. I know you probably missed it - But Neil came in with the game tied, 3-3 bases loaded 1 out. I wouldn't say the game was over yet, a ground ball from a good pitcher or even limiting the damage keep it a ball game. Neil walked Hector "never been walked before" Sanchez to give up the lead, a hit then a huge HR to Myers.

Bochy was at fault as much as the other two guys, he has really lost his touch for managing a bullpen

    1. Stratton was lights out in 3 IP his last appearance. If he's your multi-inning relief guy you should be able to call on him to pitch the 6'th and 7'th innings if your starter can only go 5 for whatever reason. If he can't give you those innings, you need to find that out. So I think using Stratton to start the 6'th is defensible. The only problem with that thinking is the Giants need to start winning games sooner than later or they will find themselves completely out of contention.

You have a point about Ramirez.

    2. Maybe i'm just way down on Stratton - But I don't use him in any game we have a lead late. Kid had a ERA of 8 in AAA and guys bat .300 against him. His last outing was nice, but we should be in "we need to win every game" mode already. IF we could use Gearin for 2 innings when we were down 8, we really could have used him when we were up 2. Gearrin/Kontos/Strickland/Law should get you those 4 innings. If you really need a 5th arm it should have been Okert. I just think the last 2 guys that should have pitched, got really long leases in the wrong situations.

Glad Neil got DFA'd, the Giants have lost a few games depending on career AAAA players because of big Springs (LF-Neil.)

    3. This is from Pavlovic's twitter: "Exit velocity on hits Stratton gave up: 102 mph, 70, 74, 71. That's a rough way to blow a lead."
those are bloopers, which are outs most of the time.

  2. See what happens when you stop watching the game and walk your dog, the Giants lose. Lesson learned.

  3. T he Pads 1st 2 hits were hard hit off of fastballs, the next 2 hits were bloop hits and the rest is history. I won't be shocked if Rameriz is DFA.

  4. We can only hope this is not the resurrected Chris Stratton, that his other appearance is what we'll see. That may be really wishful -- he wasn't particularly sharp in Sacrmento either.
As for Neil Ramirez, this is not the first time he's been lit up like a hundred-year-old's birthday cake. His outing in Colordo April 22 was even worse. But that was Colorado -- the team and the location -- this was the Padres in San Francisco! Not a good sign. One other outing, in AZ was a mixed bag -- he struck out 4 batters in 1.1 innings, but D'backs managed to score one of the K's (wild pitch) plus a run on a single and double. A passed ball figured, too. That might have been bad luck.
In both cases, Giants are kinda stuck, having lost 2 of their best (Smith and Bumgarner temporarily). There are, however, more than a few who are looking good in Sacramento.

  5. Ramirez came into a tie game and proceeded to spit out the bit. Then the three run homer in the 6th was just a cherry on the top. The hits off Stratton were mostly dinkers that could have gone either way. Only one line drive, from my recollection.

Ramirez should be DFAed, pronto. Perhaps replaced by the resurgent Crick.
