Game Wrap 4/4/2017: Giants 8 D'Backs 4

The Giants offense took out their frustrations on Patrick Corbin and the D'Backs bullpen to run up an 8-2 lead.  This time the bullpen came through with 4 shutout innings for the Win.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.  With Denard Span's left hip barking again and a lefty on the mound, Hernandez got the start in CF and came through with 4 RBI's.  One of the hits was a blooper to RF, but hey, it looks like a scorching liner in the boxscore!

Hunter Pence RF- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .400.  Pence did not score a run or drive one in, but the Giants need him to be healthy and swinging a hot bat if they want to make another championship run.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .400.  Crawford continues to look like he is on top of his game.

Eduardo Nunez 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .556.  Nunez is acting like he wants to squelch any talk of a midseason promotion for Jae-Gyun Hwang.

Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .571.  Hitting 8'th made Brandon Crawford a better hitter.  Now it's Panik's turn.  Hey, somebody has to bat 8'th!

Johnny Cueto RHP- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.  Giants pitchers take pride in their hitting and Cueto is no exception.  He drives in 1 run and scores another to help his own cause.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.20.  Cueto was not as sharp as he can be.  Chalk it up to his first start of the season, the ballpark and running the bases.

Cory Gearrin, George Kontos, Derek Law, Hunter Strickland- 1 scoreless inning each.  The bullpen needed that, especially Derek Law needed to forget Opening Day.  Mission accomplished!

The Giants evened their early season record at 1-1 and evened up the D'Backs record at the same time.  The Dodgers again showed their vulnerability to LHP's as Clayton Richard shut them down for 8 innings in a surprising Padres shutout win, 4-0 to even both the Dodgers and Padres records at 1-1.  The Rockies became the only undefeated team in the NL West at 2-0 with a 6-5 win over the BrewCrew.

Matt Moore tries for an opening series win tonight facing RHP Taijuan Walker.

The Giants are reportedly nearing a minor league contract with OF Drew Stubbs to get a bit more depth at the CF position.

3 comments:

  1. Drew Stubbs strikeout rate over 40% last year, hits around .200 BA lately. Maybe Gorky's night last night will keep Stubbs off the books.

  2. 4 game series. Moore and Samardzija both need wins.

  3. I read Strickland, during Spring Training, changed his leg kick a bit to add more deception. Also that he has changed his mechanics a little bit (not much) and has improved his offspeed stuff significantly. Plus he spent most of Spring Training working on his two-seamer to get outs quicker.

I hope all that is true.
