Game Wrap 5/8/2016: Rockies 2 Giants 0

For the second game in a row, the Giants failed to score a run in the first 9 innings, but there were no extra innings in this one as the Rockies scored 2 runs early and made them stand up.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt- 2 for 3, BB, CS(4).  BA= .327.  The Giants ran themselves out of a couple of opportunities in this one.  Belt has been CS in all 4 of his attempts this season.  I didn't see it, but he also reportedly got a bad jump on Pence's double failing to score when he probably should have.

Hunter Pence- 3 for 4, 2B.   BA= .302.  Pence is hot.  You would think that with Belt and Pence getting on base 6 times between them while hitting back-to-back in the lineup, would produce a run or two.

Jeff Samardzija- 7.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.17.  Giants waste a dominant performance by the Shark.  Gotta capitalize on those!

Albert Suarez- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  The silver lining in this game is the Giants may have finally found their long reliever.  So far this season, the Giants have learned a hard lesson in just how hard it is to replace a guy like Yusmeiro Petit(BTW, take a gander at Petit's stat line for the Nationals). Suarez is a big guy who has kicked around the minors for awhile.  The Giants signed him as a minor league FA.  He got shelled in spring training, but turned in two dominant starts in his last two appearances for AAA Sacramento.  Today, he showed a 95 MPH FB with sink and did a nifty job of inducing a GIDP after giving up the single.

The Loss dropped the Giants into an NL West first place tie with the Dodgers who topped the BJ's 4-2(the Dodgers lead by a percentage point).  The winning Rockies are 1 game back in 3'rd place. The D'Backs won to gain a game, 2 games off the pace while the Padres lost to remain 3.5 games behind in last place.

The Giants begin a home series against the BJ's tomorrow with Jake Peavy trying to turn his season around facing hard throwing Aaron Sanchez.

Angel Pagan may hit the DL tomorrow if he's not ready to go for the Toronto series.  Gotta think Jarrett Parker would be the callup.

Bryce Harper became the first MLB player in over 100 years to reach base 7 times without a hit.  In the 4 games series against the Cubs, Harper had just 4 AB's while walking 13 times plus 1 HBP.  The Mad Genius(or is it Evil Genius?) Joe Maddon's handiwork on display here.

  1. Belt had to wait a bit on Pence's double, see if CarGo was going have room to get under it.
