Down on the Farm: 6/23/2014

AAA  Round Rock Express edged the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4:

NTSH.  With Joe Panik up in SF, Nick Noonan moves over to 2B and Chris Dominguez played SS.  Matt Duffy did not appear in Richmond's game.  Is he moving up?

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Harrisburg Senators 7-2:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .286.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .263.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .232.
Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .255.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 9 K, ERA= 2.69.

Parker now has 5 consecutive multi-hit games.  Big strikeout game for Blach, a part of his game that has lagged this year.  As mentioned above, Matt Duffy DNP.  Is he headed to Fresno?

High A  Modesto Nuts blanked the San Jose Giants 2-0:

Joe Kurrasch(LHP)- 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.82.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.55.

Kurrasch continues to quietly pitch very well.  Johnson pulls off the relatively rare 4 K inning.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Rome Braves 7-5:

Lofton(.230), Bednar(.279), Ty Ross(.234), Eric Sim(.230)- 2 hits each, Sim- 2B.
Jeremy Sy(.237)- reached base 3 times.
Chase Johnson(RHP)- 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.33.
Carlos Alvarado(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Ray Black(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.35.

Not sure what to make of Alvarado.  He's 24 yo, kicked around for years in the Tigers organization but never breaking out of the DSL/VSL despite putting up decent numbers.  Signed by the Giants in 2012, he's pitched well for the DSL, AZL and now for Augusta.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Everett Aquasox 7-1:

Will Callaway(3B)- 4 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .296.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.76.
EJ Encinosa(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

Rookie AZL  A's topped the Giants 6-4:

Richard Amion(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .400.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .417.
Randy Ortiz(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(3).  BA= .500.
Luis Pino(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Greg Brody(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Love what Amion is doing, but he needs to be doing it at a higher level.  I will be tracking Jonah Arenado closely.  Stay hot, kid!  Greg Brody was the Giants 11'th round draft pick. He makes his pro debut.

DSL Giants outhit the Yankees1 8-7:

NTSH.  Kelvin Beltre has now been out of the lineup for 3 or 4 games.  Assume some sort of injury?

  1. Gosh, I sure hope Duffy gets a chance in Fresno... more than anything, I hope he isn't injured!

Speaking of promotions, Steven Okert is moving to the Dog Pound in Richmond. Good for him, he's certainly earned it... Maybe the Giants make a big move and promote Ray Black to close in San Jose??

    1. It's definitely time for Ray Black to move up, IMO. When a guy is that old and throws that hard, I see absolutely no downside to moving him as far as fast as you can.

    2. Especially with that kind of fragility in his shoulder. Only so many bullets, as they say...

    3. Heard some of the beginning of the Richmond game yesterday. No worries, Duffy was given a routine day off.

I'll throw it out there that at some point after the all star break, my money says he's got a better than even chance of a look at Fresno (however late in the season that may be). Coincidentally, that would duplicate Duffy's 2013 progression.

Although, one variable could be how Panik does at the top. In the case that he struggles mightily (though I'm sure we all have somewhat higher expectations for him, lol), it's conceivable that he could re-clog the Grizzlies roster. At that point, you'd also be forced to plug in a Giants trade for 2B as a possible scenario for a number of our farm boys.

  2. Steven Okert to Richmond baby! There might be more movement than usual this year on the farm. Will Duffy get the call to Fresno? No word on the twitter machine yet. That was a very nice game from Blach - dude really knows how to scatter hits, its looking like a skill set at this point.

  3. Would have loved to see Dominguez playing SS. That's a big dude out there!

  4. Matt Duffy is back in the line-up today for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Guess he is staying put for now.
