Game Wrap 6/21/2014: Giants 6 D'Backs 4

The Giants got just enough pitching to support a sustained offensive attack and escape with their first win in 7 games.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence- 2 for 5, HR(11).  BA= .299.  Pence also threw out a runner at 2B and continues a typical Hunter Pence season.  He's hitting .349 with 3 HR's over his last 10 games.

Buster Posey- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .284.  Both of Buster's hits were smoked.  He's hitting .351 over his last 10.

Pablo Sandoval- 3 for 5.  BA= .272.  Pablo stays hot hitting something like .350 over his last 38 games after starting the season hitting .172 or something like that over his first 33 games.  Pabs is also hitting .471 over his last 10 games and .338 for the month of June.

Joe Panik- 0 for 0, BB.  BA= .000.  Joltin' Joe Panik makes his MLB debut and draws a walk.  Very appropriate if you know the history of his peripheral stats.

Ryan Vogelsong- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 4.13.  Not a great start for Vogey, but he was 1 run better than opposing starter Brandon McCarthy through 5 innings.  The bullpen took over from there.

Jeremy Affeldt- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.44.  Affeldt is having a great season since hitting the DL early on.

Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 1.23.  Casilla and Machi give the Giants 2 shutdown setup RHP's that help them shorten games they have the lead in.

Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(21).  ERA= 4.91.  OK, this was not a good performance by Romo.  He was saved purely by the whims of the BABIP gods.  With 1 out, Roger Kieschnick smoked a double up the right-centerfield alley.  Didi Gregorious then squibbed an IF single to put 2 runners on.  Parra's grounder to 2B moved the runners up.  That brought Paul Goldschmidt to the plate with a dilemma.  Do you pitch to the most dangerous hitter in the lineup, or put the lead run on base?  Bruce Bochy came out, towering over Romo and put his hands on both of Romo's shoulders giving him a pep talk, or something.  It was a very odd scene!  Romo the proceeded to hang a slider right in Goldy's wheelhouse and it got smoked up the right-centerfield alley just like it should have been.  Fortunately for Romo and the Giants, Hunter Pence was in a good position and caught the drive after a short run.  Not sure what the deal is with Romo's slider, but right now it is not a good pitch!

The Win maintained the Giants lead over the Dodgers at 4 games in the NL West after the bad guys topped the Padres 5-2.

The Giants send their ace, Madison Bumgarner out to finish the series with a win facing Mike Bolsinger today.

  1. Wonder if Romo has some nagging, undisclosed injury requiring a trip to the DL and a replacement closer of say, Casilla for the duration?

    1. I believe nagging injuries that we never know about are a common cause of sudden regressions in performance.
