Down on the Farm: 6/5/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Las Vegas 51's 9-4:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .260.
Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .321.
Mark Minicozzi(LF)- 3 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .439.
Chris Dominguez(RF)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .288.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, GO/AO=14/2.  ERA= 4.10.

Nice game for Brown.  He needs to string a bunch of these together.  I remember when Minicozzi was a young middle IF prospect.  He could always hit.  Career got derailed by injuries.  I think he could really help some MLB club as a RH bat off the bench.  Nice start for Kickham.  He also needs to string a few of these together.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels Defeated the Trenton Thunder 8-5:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .329.
Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(4), BB.  BA= .262.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Save(1).  ERA= 2.45.

High A  San Jose Giants lassoed the High Desert Mavericks 4-1:

Chuckie Jones(RF)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .235.
Joe Kurrasch(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB 3 K's.  ERA= 2.04.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets downed the Lexington Legends 9-6:

Brandon Bednar(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .270.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .300.
Ryan Tuntland(1B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .209.
John Polonius(2B)- 3 for 3, 2B.  BA= .214.
Donald Snelton(LHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 1.15.

RafRod is hitting .300?  Is that the first time in his career he's been at or above that mark?

DSL  Giants topped the Nationals 4-1:

Mikey Edie(CF, 16 yo)- 3 for 4, SB(3).  BA= .300.
Anthony Gomez(1B, 19 yo)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .417.
Victor Concepcion(RHP, 18 yo)- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.

Concepcion is 6'0", 170 lbs.  He was knocked around in his first appearance.  Nice recovery here.  Edie's DOB is listed as 7/3/1997 which is the day after the international signing opening which means he turned 16 the day after.  Anybody know what the cutoff birthdate is for the international signing cycle?

  1. Love it when the kids sweep the day. Hunter has another good day. Pen looks like its really in good shape, and nice to see Kickham hopefully get on track. We've been very lucky at the big club on injuries, and now at least have guys ready in case (pen and starters).

Can we PLEASE bring up Panik? He can't have less utility than Arias.

    1. They should not call up Panik until they are convinced he's ready to be the everyday 2B. He needs to be playing every day.

    2. I totally agree. Bringing a kid up to soon could potentially sabotage his career. If he struggles (and he most likely would), the psychological impact on the player could be tough to overcome. Not to mention the same for the front office personnel in the case of continuing mediocre performance- once management loses the love...

      Just my humble opinion though.

  2. Can Minicozzi play 2B?

    1. Minicozzie was a SS/2B early in his career. Not sure he could do it now. Probably in an emergency situation.

  3. Ok, I get that. I guess I am thinking he should be playing every day, but I know most think Hicks is the better pull. Not really sure what more he can do to prove his worth; his defense was never an issue and his offense seems to be ok. Certainly don't see how he's worse than Hicks, notwithstanding HIcks' timely hits. But we've had this discussion before. As long as we're winning, can't really complain.

  4. Hicks is one of those players where statistics can not measure their value to a team... Plus those double plays with Crawford are beauties to watch...

    1. I think you actually can measure it. Look up Hicks' stat page on Fangraphs. His 8 HR's, .702 OPS, + Bsr and + D all add up to an fWAR of 1.0 on the season so far. We're a bit over 1/3 of the way through the season. That projects to an fWAR of about 2.8-3 over the full season. Probably not an All-Star, but a lot harder to upgrade than a glance at his .191 BA would lead you to believe.
