Down on the Farm: 6/16/2014

All of the full season farm teams were idle.

Short Season  Salem-Keiser Volcanoes outhit the Vancouver Canadians 10-9:

Johnshwy Fargas(CF-LF)- 3 for 5, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .375.
Travious Relaford(SS)- 2 for 6, BB.  BA= .222.
Ryan Jones(3B-2B)- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .235.
Craig Massoni(LF-1B)- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .308.
Jacob McCasland(RHP)- 1.2 IP 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 3.38.

Fargas seems to really be the guy to watch on this team so far as none of the 2014 draftees have made it to the roster yet.

DSL  Red Sox blanked the Giants 5-0:

Anthony Gomez(DH, 19 yo)- 2 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .341.

The big news out of Giants Land yesterday was the signing of 23 yo Cuban exile Daniel Carbonell.  Shankbone has an excellent rundown on Carbonell on his site, You Gotta Like These Kids linked to the left.  My short take on Carbonell is he is a tremendous athlete.  On videos he looks more like a football wide receiver than a baseball player.  He has long arms and legs with a lean, muscular torso and raw-boned strength.

There is not a lot of excess movement in his swing, but with his long arms, it looks like it might be a tad on the long side.  He gets tremendous leverage at the point of contact.  The big question is how often he will square up the ball against live pitching.  I guess my comp for him from the 2014 draft would be Jacob Gatewood with a filled out frame.  He has a chance to be a true 5-tool player.  As always, the big question mark is the hit tool.

He is currently in Mexico.  It will probably take at least 3 weeks for him to get a work visa.  He will most likely be assigned to High A San Jose for his initial stateside professional experience.  The signing price is a $1 M bonus with a 4 year MLB contract which is apparently only activated if he is on the 25 man active roster.  Otherwise, he gets paid minor league wages.  Total value of the contract can range from approximately $1.4 M-$3.1 M.  Low risk, high upside signing.  I like it!

  1. I like the description of the kid and as always root for him to succeed.

If he moves quickly through they system, can he get on the 25 man active roster before he is, say, 25???
