  1. I really hope the Giants get Aramis Garcia and Dylan Davis signed soon. That Salem-Keizer team doesn't have a real offensive threat, and those two guys would not only give the squad a boost, but I'm sure they'd help sell more tickets too. Heck, Davis went to Oregon State. He'd be a fan favorite!

    What's the hold up?!

    1. The Garcia family are a smart family and Im sure there waiting for the best possible deal.

  2. Related, what's the deadline to sign these guys? Is it in July?

    1. I'm pretty sure I read July 18. They've got time, but a good number of top picks have already signed, and some of them are already out there playing. Obviously Beede can't sign until his season is over, but I don't see the hold up on a lot of the other guys.

  3. The Giants have some fringe types of prospects like Crick and Susac that have the potential to be producers in the MLB but also have some warts that might limit them eventually. Sabean is going to have to do his magic and sort through them in any trades to ensure we keep the keepers. He's been pretty good about that in past and this year he may have to be his best to get us some of the young proven pitchers that are on the market and a second baseman that we can count on while Panik develops.

    1. The counterpoint to this is that Brandon Crawford never cracked a top 200 much less a top 100 list and now he's a top 10 SS in baseball. Just because they are fringe nationally on the top lists doesn't mean they aren't great prospects. The Giants choose to not promote their guys to the national press to the point of high comedy. Of course now there is also a lot of stat comps as soon as draft picks hit pro ball. Joe Panik has been able to keep his K/BB and contact rates at an excellent rating. He's shifted off of short, but that isn't that big a deal. While he won't warrant the hype of some of the top picks, he might have the skills to play. Of course, he might not be up to Craw's sleeper style, but the point the Giants hit on again and again is what does a guy do right, not what he can do wrong. Its served them pretty well in the past 5 years.

    2. Yeah, I don't agree that Crick is a fringe prospect.

    3. Prospects are rank, especially hitters based on their batting ability which Crawford in the minors was very mediocre, you really can't blame scouts who didn't rank a .250 hitter in the minors as a top prospect.

I completely disagree on the statement that Susac and Crick are fringe prospects, in my book I have them rated very highly. If Crick is traded we better get someone like Pence.

    4. As if you really need any other reasons to disregard Keith Law, he called Crawford's ceiling "John McDonald" a few years back - a guy who topped out at 353 PAs - and that's my point - the Giants have grinded through a couple guys now, Hector Sanchez being another, while their big prize Belt was insanely discredited to them (Law again for example, predicting he would be traded because the Giants don't appreciate his OBP capabilities).

Susac and Crick are top 100 prospects for sure. I'm just saying the Giants have had good success, and it looks likely Susac could do something similar to Crawford. What people don't realize is how hurt Craw was for those bad stats in the Eastern.

  4. But to credit Keith Law has always pushed hard for Belt, even saying that he is better than Goldschmidt and Freeman (until this day he keeps saying it) even though Belt is nowhere close to those 2 guys IMO

    1. Can't rehash this one again Anon, here ya go: http://whenthegiantscometotown.blogspot.com/2012/11/thoughts-on-brandon-belt.html

All credit to the Giants, none to snarky bloggers and sports personalities.

  5. Crick and Susac are fringy because they could crash and burn at the MLB level at about the same rate of them having success at it in my opinion. Susac has a history of injuries and concussions and some questionable defense and we can't pretend that Crick is ever going to have the command he needs to be successful. Like I said, both have warts and while they are prospects, even perhaps top prospects for us, I would still classify them as fringy. The good news is that Sabean seems to have the knack of dealing these types of prospects for useful pieces with the prospects never coming back to haunt us.

    1. This is a classic case where anon's should have handles, as two different anon's are arguing slightly different things. I would argue we don't know enough about Crick still, but he's never going to be a Cliff Lee most likely.

    2. I wasn't defending Keith Law, just saying that he's not always against Giants prospects. He does for some reason love Belt and does not like Crawford at all.

    3. My definition of a fringe prospect is one who has a slight chance of making it to the majors in a reserve role, usually a cup of coffee or two. A perfect example of someone I would call a fringe prospect is Juan Perez. Susac and Crick, on the other hand, have legitimate chances of becoming at least above-average starters in the majors. I do not consider them fringe prospects. Chris Dominguez? Now THERE is a fringe prospect if I ever saw one!

    4. Anon handles? Hell ya! It takes an extra minute or so, but short of my address & PIN, I think it is a sufficient & required effort for self-identification on my part. Greta discussion! Much better than reading about how the Hometown 9 cannot close games of late.

  6. Switching "fringe issues", ... can Duvall play 2b? I'm wondernig if he'd be a good option to bring up if the Gmen are now realizing the bloom has come off Hicks. SFGate reports they are thinking of making a change and it would seem if Duvall could play there, he could be an upgrade for Hicks. He could play all three positions and if he sticks, then EA becomes the back up with Arias (and Arias becomes less critical).

ps, happy to try to do this with handle but I don't know how (since I don't have a Google Account). :)

    1. Nope, Duvall cannot play 2B. It'd be great if he could, but he doesn't have the lateral range for it.

PiLamBear! Didn't realize it was you!

    2. Duvall was drafted as a 2B, but has not played there since the summer after being drafted in short season ball. I assume there is a reason the Giants moved him off 2B so quickly. In other words, no, Duvall is not going to be playing 2B for the Giants.

Hit Reply as, and from the menu you see, choose Name/URL. Type PiLamBear in the space for Name, and hit Publish. That should work. Good luck.

  7. Here's a draft-related question. Do you all think the Giants are going to have a tough time signing Beede? I got into a bit of a back and forth with someone on Twitter about this yesterday. Many people seem to think the kid is going to ask for the moon, and we'll have to go overslot to get him. Am I crazy for thinking he doesn't have a ton of leverage?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why would he ask for the moon? Its not like he fell, on most if not everyones draft boards he was in the mid 20s. Chances of him going higher next year are pretty slim and the fact that he would be a Senior makes it even worse in his case

    2. Anon,

Mark Appel and Scott Boras would like a word with you.

      Delete
    3. DrB, but Beede has done that once already and it didn't pay off big time. Difference is that Appeal was considered a top 3 prospect unlike Beede

      Delete
    4. But he was considered a top 5 prospect at the beginning of the season and Scott Boras is his advisor. The Giants have always gotten their draftees signed so I think it will happen. I just don't think it's a slam dunk.

    5. Yeah hopefully he signs quick. Btw, Appel oh my 23 years old in A+ with an ERA over 11. Not looking good at all. Its no bad look either he has been knocked around in every single start. Too early to tell but not looking good. They should have gone with Kris Bryant all the way.

Hey Doc have you seen what Joey Gallo is doing at AA?? Looks like a future HR & K champ. Surprisingly he has put up good avg's. Might turn into Dunn or Stanton?
