Game Wrap 6/17/2012: Mariners 2 Giants 1

Madison Bumgarner went head to head with Felix Hernandez and outpitched him, but the Giants could not come up with the big hit and lost the bullpen game in the bottom of the 9'th inning.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 2 for 4.  BA= .297.  Bochy pulled Buster, who was the DH in this game, for a PR after a one out single to RF.  When you consider the probabilities of a single runner scoring from 1B with 1 out, I don't think that was the right move.  Nate replaced him as the DH and came up later with the bases loaded and grounded out.  Nate has been hot and was in there against a RHP, but Posey is arguably the Giants best hitter.  We'll never know if he could have executed the needed base hit in that situation where Nate did not.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .250.  Belt now has a 6 game hitting streak going.

Madison Bumgarner- 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.92.  Bumgarner conserved pitches a bit better than Feliz and lasted one more inning.  At one point he retired 18 consecutive batters.  Alas, it was all for naught.

The Dodgers came from behind once more to edge the ChiSox 2-1 in 10 innings so the Giants once again fall 5 games off the pace in the NL West.  They remain a game ahead of the Braves for the top Wild Card position.

The Giants now travel to SoCal to take on the LA Angels of Anaheim or of Albert Pujols or whatever.  Matt Cain makes his first start since the perfecto in game 1 facing a former Giant hope for the future, Jerome Williams.

    1. IMO, Bochy is a good manager who is not quite great. Like all managers, he sometimes makes some head scratching game decisions. Bochy's MO has always been to go for the win now and let future innings take care of themselves. I'd be willing to bet that the odds usually favor that approach. Not so sure with this one. Seems to me that the chances of Christian coming around to score were smaller than the chances the game would remain tied and the DH position come around again in an important AB.

    2. Oh and thanks for the shout out to the daughters. They are wonderful girls. All grown up now and that's a hard adjustment for the old man.

    3. I guess I'm entering this discussion only because I find so silly and distasteful the (unfortunately typical) blustering nonsense of bacci. Like you, DrB, I generally trust Bochy to manage intelligently. Here, Bochy himself said that if Sanchez's smash hadn't been stopped, improbably, by Smoak, Christian would have scored; and that he, Bochy, was right to have someone speedy run for Posey. As you, DrB, pointed out, Nate has been hot and was a LH batter against a RH pitcher; and in fact he ran the count to 3-2. Moreover, Nate was preceded by the excellent Cabrera. In the event, Bochy's decision may perhaps have been wrong, but it was perfectly plausible when dealing with probabilities, when by definition one has a likelihood in baseball of being wrong a good bit of the time.

    4. I agree with campanari. Bochy is neither idiot nor genius, definitely a good manager, and while not great yet, I think that potential is there depending on how he handles the team this decade. He's off to a good start with 2010-11 and 2012 so far, I think.

In this case, I have to agree with DrB on this one, the odds of scoring from firstbase with one out already is pretty slim, too slim to take out one of your best hitters. While Christian would have scored if Hanchez smash went by Smoak, what are the odds of that smash normally happening? Then again, Hanchez has been pretty good in RBI situations and Christian has stolen the occasional base as well. Still, lower odds of scoring, basically 50/50 in that situation, one out, man on first, on average. He flipped the coin and he lost.

  3. I want the Hawaii players to do well, but I want the Giants to win the game most of all.. Hows about Giants 2 Halos 1 with Jwil getting a no decision.
