Down on the Farm: 6/7/2012

AAA  Las Vegas 51's topped the Fresno Grizzlies 9-6:

Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .336.
Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .231.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .303.
Eli Whiteside(2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .220.

AA  New Hampshire Fisher Cats blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-0 in the completion of yesterday's suspended game:

Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .280.
Andy Reichard(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.49.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.37.

Reichard started and had a no-no through 3 IP, when the game was suspended.

Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 6-3 in the 7 inning regularly scheduled game:

Chris Heston(RHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.98.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks thumped the San Jose Giants 11-6:

Ryan Lollis(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .298.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .267.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .258.
Devin Harris(DH)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .192.
Bobby Haney(2B)- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .417.
Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(12).  BA= .246.

I think Ricky is happy to be playing in front of his family again.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets shut out the Greensboro Grasshoppers 2-0:

Ben Thomas(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .245.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 3.45.

Totally dominant start for Crick.  His FB topped out at 99 MPH. Possibly more importantly, he was able to throw the changeup for strikes against LH batters.  I might have to re-think ranking him below Blackburn in my mid-season rankings.  I think it's pretty tough to say a SP his age who hits 99 on the gun and who is developing an effective changeup this early is not the organization's #1 prospect.  Zack Wheeler did not have a changeup at a higher level last year and was not hitting 99 MPH.

DSL  Giants downed the Nationals 10-4:

Rando Moreno(SS, 20 yo)- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .263.
Miguel Gomez(C, 19.7 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .250.
Royel Astacio(3B)- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .267.

  1. Maybe startiing pitching In the system isn't so bad, Crick, Blackburn, Stratton, Agosto, Kickham, Marlowe...

As usual. hitting needs to catch with pitching.

Noonan is intriguing. They haven't called him up. Is that a case of 'handle with care' with something valuable?

  2. I like Noonan. I really wanted to see Emmanuel Burriss succeed in the Bigs, but he's just not getting it done with that low average and sub .300 OBP- not to mention only one extra base hit in 104 ABs. Maybe its time to let Manny go and bring up Noonan to back up the middle infield. I doubt Theriot is going to keep up this pace, and who knows if they'll re-sign him next season. Freddy Sanchez is all but finished, so I think now is a perfect time to bring up Noonan- even if it is as a back up middle IF at this point.

    1. No need to play around with Noonan, the 40-man roster, or Burriss yet. I figure Burris will be cut when Panda gets reactivated. I think we are still waiting to see if Noonan is for real. Of course, we may have to see him with the big league club to complete that assessment. I am really pleased with the (re?)emergence of Noonan this year. Another reason why drafting young guys is not as pure risk as it sometimes seems - they can take their time to develop sometimes.

    2. Theriot is red hot right now. He won't keep up his current pace, but I think he can hit around .300 for the season and provide a lot of gritty gamerness. I wouldn't spend too much to hang onto him for next year, though.

  3. DrBGiantsfan,

By the way, this is a fantastic blog. I've been searching for a site devoted to in depth coverage and analysis regarding the Giants minor league system. Keep up the good work!

  4. Wow this sounds great Regarding Crick!!!

The 19-year-old hit as high as 99 mph on the radar gun, but stayed mostly in between 94-98 with his fastball -- the best in his four-pitch repertoire. However, the more impressive feat may have been that Crick was able to produce those numbers by experimenting with the changeup, a pitch he didn't need much during his dominant days at Sherman High School in Texas.

  5. While it is at the lower levels and Stratton/Agosta draft, the Giants ability to draft and develop pitching talent is paying off. This bodes really well for two years down the line when Zito is gone, Voggie may be declining with age (but I bet not - too much tenacity in him not to keep it up to age 37-38) and it may be wise to be trading Timmy. Also the BP arms (Affeldt, Wilson, Lopez) will need turnover to keep costs down.

For all the upset of the past few drafting days, could the Giants pitching be even better (younger/deeper) by 2014/15? Isn't this a very good thing.
