Spring Training Update: Game Wrap Reds 10 Giants 2

The game was on free MLB TV. I started watching it but quickly figured out that if that was the last place the Giants wanted to be this afternoon, it probably wasn't worth my time to watch it either. I went out and got some yard work done. Key Lines:

Joaquin Arias- 1 for 1, HR. BA= .286. Arias has done everything he could to win a roster spot.

Guillermo Mota- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.79. Mota just keeps going and going and.....

Jeff Francis(Reds)- 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 11/4. ERA= 6.65. Francis is not exactly in line for a Cy Young Award any time soon. I have a feeling the Giants are going to struggle against LHP's all season.

Tim Lincecum goes against the BrewCrew tomorrow on getaway day, This Spring training feels like it's been about a week too long already. Time to blow out of Arizona!

I was expecting to read about what you have done in the yard :)

  2. Cody Ross. We will miss him this year. I have a feeling he's going to do fine for himself on that prove it deal in a hitters park. I don't blame them for letting him walk, with a 6.5MM deal and Ross asking for 2 years. He underestimated his demand big time. Still, we'll miss him. He just didn't get going on one of his torrid streaks last year.

  3. For some reason every time I see Affeldt pitch he looks horrible. His stats until today looked good but when he gets beat, he gets beat like a drum. Red headed step children all over the world know exactly how Affeldt feels after games like today.

    1. Affeldt had a couple of bad plays behind him that made it look worse than it was. It was 90 degrees with the sun blazing down, bullpen game, nobody wanted to be there. This was about as meaningless a game as it's possible to get. I would not read anything at all into it except it was a meaningless game and the Giants didn't want to be there.

On the other hand, Jeff Francis had something to prove after the shelling he absorbed in his last start.

    2. I saw quite a few hard hit balls off of Affeldt so he may have had some bad D behind him but he also gave up plenty of hard hit balls which I see a lot out of Affeldt. I think this is the year, at some point, that you will be onboard with me on wishing Affeldt was not resigned! Give it a month or two and then we will discuss again.

they better start the season a week earlier next year...with the added playoff game

  5. They could have at least started the season tomorrow night with an ESPN game and then more games on Monday or Tuesday. That's the way they usually have done it. This spring training has been interminable!

    1. If I were to hazard a guess, it has to do with the A's and Mariners playing in Japan, and giving them time to adjust coming back.

  8. Lots of player tweets filling in the rosters. Big news so far is Mike Kickham is going to Richmond and Josh Osich is going to SJ. Not sure yet if Galindo is in SJ but it appears likely because Payne is in Augusta.

The Augusta team is going to be fun: Shawn Payne, Demondre Arnold, Kyle Crick, Brett Krill, Clayton Blackburn, Derek Law, Chuckie Jones, Josh Eshleman, Chuckie Jones!, Bryce Bandilla, Gaspar Santiago, Cody Hall, Garrett Buechele, Kelby Tomlinson, Andrew Berger that we know of so far. Sfgiantsgirl does some good work on keeping up with these guys, I got that off her/FlaGiant's posting on MCC.

Kentrell Hill and my boy Trevious Relaford are doing extended spring training.

  9. Kickham to Richmond is a bit of a surprise, and a big deal. He made a lot of progress last year in Augusta and has a high ceiling. Sounds like Melonhead Jr. Is going to AA too. Very exciting if Osich is going to SJ as it means he must be healthy. I'm tellin' ya, at least one Giants pitching prospect is going to emerge as a future ace this year and they are going to be a lot closer than a lot of people think.

    1. Will they try to make sure there wil be not a no-trade clause in the contract as they continue negotiating with Cain?

    2. I would think a lack of a no-trade clause would be a deal-breaker for Cain.
