Spring Training Update: Game Wrap Rockies 7 Giants 0

This was a game that pretty much proves spring training is too long. Tim Lincecum and Brian Wilson pitched in minor league games while none of the pitchers the Giants sent to Salt River Fields has a ghost of chance of making the MLB club. Not that it would have mattered as the Giants committed 4 errors and mustered just one hit in a game that was probably more detrimental than helpful in getting ready for the season. At least it doesn't count! Key Lines:

There were no key lines in this game!

Tim Lincecum threw 91 pitches with the San Jose Giants. He reportedly was getting his fastball up but had good secondary stuff.

Brian Wilson threw 15 pitches in a minor league game and reportedly was hitting the mid-upper 90's with the heater with no reported problems.

Next Up: Madison Bumgarner faces the Rangers in Scottsdale in a might game.

Savvy Vets fantasy auction draft tonight at 8:30 PM. I'll give a complete breakdown afterwards.

  1. Got to have one ugly game. Just hilarious it came against Moyer. Good luck on your draft - don't overbid on Matt Kemp! And don't get distracted by the Giants playing Texas on MLBN either. If you're scuffling at the very end, Andrew Cashner makes a nice sleeper - no way Street makes it through midseason either not hurt or traded.

    1. Thanks. I have some ideas for the draft but I'm a newbie at the auction thing.

    2. I absolutely love Matt Kemp as a player. I just wish he wasn't a Dodger. He is the one guy I would actually consider breaking the auction budget for, but I'll probably stay conservative.

    3. I followed your advice on Doumit. Here's hoping you can get a deal on McCann but Doumit is a nice sleeper. Matt Kemp as a player, assuming he keeps to his workouts, is amazing and terrifying. A 5 tool player with those kind of power numbers is a juggernaut in fantasy.

You won't get the bargains you did in the mock, but keep to the strategy of saving some dough for the end and you'll be good.

    4. Doumit is one of my bargain basement grabs in case I have to punt the catcher category. I don't think many people are onto him, so there's a high probability I can get him for $1-2 at the end of the draft. Wilson Ramos is another fallback option I've been looking at in the last 2-3 days.

    5. Ryan Braun's stock seems to have taken a hit due to his "troubles" and poor spring. These guys I play with are pretty savvy, so they probably won't be swayed by that, but if so, I'm thinking I could get him for $35-$40 which would be a real steal.

    6. The closer situation has suddenly become very fluid. Soria is undergoing TJ for the second time. Storen has a sore arm. Madson has a sore arm. You never know about BWillie.

    7. Yup, the Reds lefty looks good right now. I'd avoid the Royals mess if you can, but Broxton would not be my first choice if you go that route. Oh, and keep an eye out for Lorenzo Cain, speaking of the Royals.

  2. DrB, is there any chance Otero makes the club? I didn't catch if Dave and Jon mentioned his speed last night.

    1. Doubt Otero makes the team out of spring training, but it sounds like he's impressed Bochy enough that he will be high on the list of callups if the need arises mid-season.

    2. Another nail in the coffin for Steve Edlefsen.

  3. Why all the love for Doumit? That guy has been a serious disappointment for years, what makes you guys think he can turn it around? What are your thoughts on Zack Cozart for Cinci? I drafted him late after I saw Dee Gordon go about 5 rounds before projected and then Jemile Weeks 2 rounds later.

    1. Doumit has always been a beast at the plate. His injury from last year should be fully recovered and he won't be asked to catch that much by the Twinkies. He will likely play every day, though. A big problem with catchers, especially in the NL is they almost always get 1-2 days off per week costing opportunities to build up counting stats. Right or wrong, that's my thinking on Doumit. He's kind of a last punt plan though. Ramos has been rising on my personal draft board over the last few days.

Shhh!!!! Love Zack Cozart. He's my secret punt pick for SS tonight. Don't tell anyone!

I have to say, I'm starting to get cold feet on Lawrie. He's got some kind of muscle strain and still isn't playing in games, and he is still a bit unproven. I might just try for Sandoval at 3B and use Lawrie's money to go after a Napoli or McCann at catcher.

    2. So I'm doing a H2H for the first time. Its a 16 team league. Of MCC folks. That's where I picked Doumit. He has always been a good hitter and is going to DH a lot, which reduces the wear and tear. 16 teams, man the talent dries up. You have to punt somewhere, i decided catcher was a good place to start.

Given the choice I'd look at Ramos for sure. If there are not too many Giants fans, Posey may drop enough. He's a hard one to gauge this year.

I was frustrated with my 2nd round choices in this league and reached for Sandoval. I believe in him that much. (20th overall - but I wasn't going pitcher in a h2h league - we'll see how it works out). And then later I grabbed Darvish. Sandoval and Darvish were my 2 gambles.

    3. I think Sandoval is relatively safe. Darvish is a risk, but has huge upside.

I'm going to try to stick to exclusively high BA guys. I"m tired of losing the BA category because 1 or 2 guys drag it down.

  4. A guy in my league had a choice to keep Lawrie or Panda and he kept Lawrie. The argument is that they should have similar stats but Lawrie will steal bases. I am punting batting average and making sure I win the other 4 offensive categories which allows me to take risks like Alex Rios and Goldschmidt. I also took Lorenzo Cain in the mid rounds, he has been on fire this spring. RP is pretty dynamic right now with guys like Storen, Madson, and Soria all with injuries. There are quite a few set up guys who could become closers that are worth taking a shot on like Jensen, Robertson, Pestano, and Clippard. I'm still not sold on Doumit, go after Posey or Napoli if you have the chance or settle on Yadier or Avila or Montero since those guys won't kill you on Avg. but unless you plan on streaming C all year it is worth it to lock up a decent one.

    1. When you can lock up a good catcher its pretty fun. I caught Joe Mauer on the year he was hurt to start, his batting title. That was fun, I think it was a third round grab. Next year he went top ten and didn't get it going.

I like your potential closer list. Its always hard to pay for closers when so many can be grabbed as the year plays out.

Snagged Cain as well, Lorenzo... I like that guy.
