Spring Training Update: Game Wrap Giants 5 Padres 2

Madison Bumgarner and 5 other Giants pitchers dominated the Padres while the offense used speed to scratch out enough runs to win going away. Key lines:

Juan Perez- 1 for 1, HR. BA= .500. Perez' dinger was insurance run in the top of the 8'th inning.

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB. BA= .429. I know it's early spring, but I'm starting to wonder if it was necessary to acquire Pagan. This guy looks like the perfect leadoff batter to me.

Eli Whiteside- 1 for 2, BB, SB. BA= .375. Is Whiteside winning the reserve catcher job?

Madison Bumgarner- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.59. Bumgarner is off to a sensational start to spring training. 9 K's against just 1 BB in 5.2 IP? Dominant! He may be the Giants ace right now!

Affeldt, Hensley, Romo and Otero each pitched a scoreless inning. Romo got a standing O from the Giants fans, who were in the majority in the Padres crib, after he struck out 2 Padres batters in the inning. He looked that impressive!

Tomorrow's game promises to be one of the most interesting of the spring. Matt Cain goes against the Reds and Aroldis Chapman in Scottsdale with Buster Posey scheduled to make his spring game debut.

  1. Andy Baggerly on his twitter account is guessing that the Giants will have extention announcements on Cain and Madbum shortly.. Lets hope this is true..

  2. I wish my boss would tweet me that I got a $20MM raise. Good work Giants if they can lock down Cain and MadBum.

  3. Cain AND MadBum extensions? Waking up to this is a little like Christmas...

This should be a great game today.

We need Pagan for the fiery persona. Plus they needed to save their dough. I like this Blanco guy though. Its nice to have options.

  4. Blanco had a pretty decent year in 2010, but it seemed like 2011 was a bit of a lost year for him as he spent it entirely in Triple-A in the Nationals and Royals' organizations. Blanco's BB/K numbers are fantastic, but it seems like he sports little to no power at all, which significantly depresses his value. Even with a nice spring, I am not sure how much impact Blanco would have on this team.

The more and more I read up on Juan Perez, the more I like him. I know he's a little older (25) and he doesn't walk a whole lot, but in two of his three years in the minors he's been very efficient on the basepaths (sans 2010), though he hasn't stolen a tremendous amount. I like his swing and he's got some pop. He reminds me of a very Andres Torres-esque player in the sense that he has good speed, but isn't looking to slap it like most speedy guys. He wants to drive the ball, much like Torres did. (though Torres' plate discipline was better, Torres was older).

  5. Constructing an elite pitching staff with home grown arms is so tough. What a huge positive step it would be to get both Cain and MadBum extended. As a Giant fan I would be oh so proud of management.

BTW, has anyone else noticed how Cain has come out of his shell this spring? Instead of hiding from the mic or the camera like in the past, he seems to be enjoying it. Not hamming it up, but just speaking openly. And, he is pretty darn articulate. Who would have known?

  6. Thanks for the great comments, everybody. I don't have anything to add. I think one of the things this blog has going for it compared to some others is the consistent quality of the discussion in the
    Comments sections.
