College Corner: Weekend Lines for Draftable Players

Marcus Stroman and Kyle Zimmer raised their draft stock this weekend while Travis Jankowski and Peter O'Brien raised theirs on the offensive side of the ledger.

Marcus Stroman, RHP, Duke: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 13 K's. This performance came against Miami which provides excellent competition. Stroman's stock had to take a giant leap with this game.

Kyle Zimmer, RHP, USF: 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 11 K's. Maybe too many walks?

Brian Johnson, LHP, Florida: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. Polished college lefty does not fit the mold of Giants first round pitching draftees.

Kevin Gausman, RHP, LSU: 8.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 11 K's. Another elite pitching prospect. Walks?

Pat Light, RHP, Monmouth: 9 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 13 K's. Small program, so wonder about the competition. Scouting reports would be the deciding factor here.

Andrew Heaney, RHP, Oklahoma St.: 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. Don't know much about him. Gonna have to find out more. ERA= 0.92.

Kyle Hansen, RHP, St. John's: 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.

Martin Agosta, RHP, St Mary's: 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 8 K's.

HITTERS

Preston Tucker, OF, Florida: 4 for 11, 3B, 2 HR(8), SB(2). BA= .321.

Peter O'Brien, C, Miami: 6 for 12. BA= .389.

Jeremy Baltz, OF, St. John's: 5 for 11, HR(3), 4 SB(6).

Travis Jankowski, OF, Stony Brook: 6 for 10, 3 2B(7), HR(1), 3 SB(10. BA= .354.

Tyler Naquin, OF, Texas A&M: 3 for 11, 2B(6), HR(1), SB(9). BA= .418.

  1. Andrew Heaney is killing it. Leading the NCAA in K's, but more impressive to me because of being lefty is the control. His cumulative stats: 4-1 with 2 CGs (5 starts), 39 IP, 23 H, 8 BB and 52 Ks. .167 BAA to go with the 0.92 ERA.

One knock has been his frame, he's 6'2 but only 175. Another knock is his deceptive delivery crossing him up sometimes. The third knock was about missing bats, which obviously hasn't been a problem this year. With the stretch out (2 CGs) and the control (8BBs) and a WHIP that is around 0.79, don't think the delivery is a problem right now.

The goods: Fastball in the low 90s with good sink and he can maintain velocity throughout the game that he pairs with an advanced change and curve; he can alter his delivery, dropping his arm to lefties for example, and has some funk. He has advanced stuff with good but not scout good velocity. I like him.

  2. Also in Oklahoma, Dane Phillips is a bit of an oddball to me - he played at OK State, was supposed to transfer to Arkansas, ended up at Ok City, and he is raking - 410/504/850SLG, 10 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 37 RBI 13BB/6HBP/11K. Phillips is from Brandon Belt's hometown, lefty bat who was a Cape all-star over the summer. The knock on him is he's not much of a fielder, he primarly DH'd at OK State last year. He is supposed to be a catcher, he's been playing RF. I thought he'd be a good sleeper pick for the G's. Most likely inferior competition, but he did well at the Cape, he's in his Junior year.

Of note is his teammate Miguel Beltran, who looks to be a 1B, big lefty bat who is from Lakewood HS CA, he's a senior and his line is just as crazy: 423/509/866 SLG, 7 2B, 11 HR, 16 BB/2HBP/16K.

Ok City is the top ranked team in NAIA baseball. Yes, Freddy Sanchez is their most distinguished alum. Sleeper central baby!

  3. Martin Agosta is pitching well for St Marys.. 3-0 36 IP 27 H, 10 BB 32 K'S.. The knock on him might be he's 6'1" 178 but he throws in the mid 90's and if he improves his secondary pitches he might be pretty good.. He also said in a question and answer session I saw on the internet his favorite team is the Giants and favorite player is Timmy.. That would be neat if the Giants could draft him.. Anyway, look forward to seeing him when St Mary's visits Hawaii in April
