Spring Training Update: Game Wrap Giants 5 Indians 3

The Giants got a another solid start from Erick Surkamp and a 3 run dinger from Brett Pill to top the Tribe. Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 2 for 4. BA= .294. Buster DH'd today.

Brett Pill- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB. BA= .273. Long before Moneyball was written or anyone had heard of OBP or SLG%, a very smart manager named Earl Weaver said that baseball games are won by pitching and 3 run homers. In recent years, the Giants have not tended to get on base much or hit many HR's, so they have not had many 3 run HR's. Of course, they won the World Series anyway, but 3 run HR's are still a very good thing.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 2, BB. BA= .333. Crawford is not quite as hot as at the beginning of ST, but he's still holding his own.

Hector Sanchez- 2 for 2, 2B. BA= .480. If Buster is going to need a lot of days off, my druthers would be to keep The Hector as the backup catcher.

Eric Surkamp- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 Ks'. ERA= 4.41.

Edlefsen, Lopez and Casilla all pitched scoreless frames. Hensley allowed a run in his inning of work.

Brian Wilson was scheduled to pitch and got scratched due to "general arm soreness." I have to say I don't have a high degree of confidence in anything BWillie or the Giants have to say about his arm. He's supposed to pitch tomorrow in a minor league game.

Tim LIncecum takes the mound tomorrow evening facing the Rockies and Jamie Moyer.

  1. giants need a righty bat off the bench and an alt at first...cant see how pill doesnt make the 25

surkamp says he has no prob going back to fresno to work on stuff, but i have a feeling the fans are gonna see him before june...in any case, he and burress have gotta be making bochy and sabean feel a whole lot better about the sp depth...

and im not very good at predictions, but i am sure the giants are gonna let wilson walk his fa year...so hembree is definitely gonna be showing up sometime this season

hector or stewart...its a tough call

the nate injury thing is bothering me....and im sticking with the trade scenario...the guys they have all can play a solid defense. the only thing the giants will miss is the eye popping defense...but will get that with craw

  2. Bacci - pretty sure you know but the Gints control Wilson's contract in 2013. Doubt they'd just let him walk until 2014. Hembree will most likely show up this season though, but they'll ease him in.

Watched the game - Belt & Crawford both worked walks from down in the count. Pill's shot was first pitch swinging. Posey looked smooth with the bat. Stewie did gun Asdrubal Cabrera, not sure if Hector makes that throw, but Hectors bat is just sweet.

Blanco had some fly outs, and Burriss pulled up with a leg strain. Hopefully he's OK, and Blanco is due for some regression. As the scrubs get sent, I bet we see some tougher pitchers the last two weeks, and the averages start plummeting. Nate had better get in the lineup or he'll be the first casualty of Giant roster switch games.

Giants hit into a couple DPs as well - The Hobbit and Stewart I think. I liked how Surkamp pitched = much more apparent velocity than last year and not afraid to put it inside - he put Choo on his backside with a fastball when Choo was thinking breaking ball. I like Surkamp, and I agree with Bacc about this, we'll see him sooner than later.

    1. Surkamp has made a believer out of me this spring. I feel much better about the Giants pitching depth and future after seeing his performances.

  3. The ball is really jumping off of Hector's bat.

Not that it means much, but I'm really enjoying the lines from a couple of reserve CFs out of Miami:

Scott Cousins BA .147, OPS .443
Aaron Rowand BA .121, OPS .346.

Small sample size, Spring Training, yeah, I know. But still.
