Spring Training Update: Game Wrap 03-31-2010

The Giants rested a lot of players today, but still topped the Hated Ones 6-2 in the Cactus League finale. Key lines:

Eugenio Velez- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(5). BA= .306. No way Velez is getting sent down!

Juan Uribe- 1 for 2, HR(3). BA= .286.

John Bowker- 1 for 4. BA= .304. Bowker started in RF again.

Buster Posey- 0 for 3, BB. Posey has cooled a bit.

Matt Downs- 2 for 4, SB(2)(Home!). If Travis stays, then one out of Downs, Velez, Bowker and Torres is going to have to go.

Horacio Ramirez- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. Nice outing, but I see Fresno in his future, unless this was a a showcase for a trade.

Henry Sosa- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Henry making a case for sticking!

Alex Hinshaw- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.35.

Waldis Joaquin- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's, GO/AO= 3/0. Between Joaquin, Hinshaw and Sosa, I'd say Mota is in trouble.

rotoworld.com is reporting that the Rangers are trying to make a deal with the Giants so they can keep Ben Snyder, who they took in the Rule 5 draft. We'll see what gets worked out, but I'd guess it will be cash.

  1. Off topic, but what do you know of this Escobar kid?

  2. Alcides Escobar? Yunel Escobar? or is there some other Escobar I don't know about?

  3. Edwin Escobar. The kid the Giants received in the Ben Snyder trade today...

  4. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't seen that report until you mentioned it. Escobar is not listed in BA's top 30 Texas prospects, but Texas probably has the deepest farm system in baseball. Escobar is still just 17 years old and had an excellent K/9 in the Arizona Rookie League last season. I'd say this is a great deal for the Giants. They get a young prospect who appears to have tremendous upside for an older prospect who projects as no more than a lefty specialist out of the bullpen.
