Giants Top 50 Prospects: Honorable Mention

In no particular order:

David Quinowski LHP. BD: 04-23-1986. 5'10", 170 lbs. 2009 Stats: Salem-Keizer(Short Season)- 2-1, 1.77, 40.2 IP, 18 BB, 53 K's. Missed the 2008 season with TJ. I'm rooting for him because he went to Redlands HS in my hometown. I have no idea where the Giants will place him this year. Hopefully AA or AAA.

Dan Griffin RHP. BD: 09-29-1984. 6'7", 245 lbs. 2009 Stats: AA- 8-7, 5.42, 73 IP, 23 BB, 86 K's, GO/AO= 1.26. Was left unprotected in the Rule 5 draft, but not selected. The ERA doesn't look good, but check out those secondary stats! Let's see what he can do in Fresno!

Chris Gloor LHP. BD: 03-07-1987. 6'6", 255 lbs. 2009 Stats: Salem-Keizer(Short Season)- 7-1, 2.61, 48.1 IP, 19 BB, 48 K's. 2009 draftee. Big LHP with nice numbers in Short Season ball. In the mix for Augusta's starting rotation.

Jeremy Toole RHP. BD: 06-17-1988. 6'4", 235 lbs. 2009 Stats: Salem-Keizer- 1-4, 2.74, 46 IP, 20 BB, 41 K's. 2009 draftee. Big, hard-throwing RHP, a bit unpolished. In the mix for starter for Augusta.

Craig Westcott RHP. BD: 03-01-1986. 6'4", 225 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL(Rookie)- 4-0, 0.69, 13 IP, 3 BB, 21 K's. Salem-Keizer- 3-0, 3.26, 30.1 IP, 9 BB, 42 K's. 2009 draftee, 30'th round. Yet another big RHP. In the mix for starter in Augusta or even San Jose.

Leonardo Ochoa 3B. B- L, T-R. BD: 10-20-1989. 6'0", 180 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- .288/.388/.405 Drafted in round 48 out of high school in Canada. Flying under the radar, but I like that stat line, especially the OBP.

Sundrendy Windster OF. B-R, T-R. BD: 02-23-1989. 6'3", 185 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- .223/.303/.378. Not a great line, but he's athletic and has some power. 14 of 33 hits were for extra bases. Former bonus baby from Curacao. May repeat S-K or go to Augusta.

Julio Izturis 2B. B-S, T- R. BD: 08-29-1989. 5'11", 165 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- .313/.405/.394, 10 SB, 1 CS. Cesar and Maicur's little bro. Walked off the island, and put up pretty good numbers in his U.S. debut. Would be rated much higher if he was still playing shortstop.

Cameron Lamb RHP. BD: 05-29-1989. 6'3", 195 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- 4-1, 2.04, 57.1 IP, 28 BB's, 55 K's. Signed out of Australia 3 years ago. Finally pitched a full season as a regular starter. Throws hard, but still has control/command issues. In the mix for starting in Augusta?

Jason Jarvis RHP. BD: 10-01-1987. 6'2", 195 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- 2-1, 4.09, 22 IP, 7 BB, 22 K's, GO/AO= 2.00. A bit of a checkered history. dismissed from the Arizona State baseball team. Drafted out of indy ball. Hard thrower. Future is probably in the bullpen. I would expect to see him in Augusta or San Jose.

Kaohi Downing RHP. BD: 05-07-1986. 5'11", 180 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- 0-0, 3.07, 14.2 IP, 5 BB, 13 K's, GO/AO- 1.90. Drafted in round 50 out of Point Loma Nazerene. I would consider him Mr. Irrelevent except that I've read he hits 94 MPH on the radar guns.

Audy Santana RHP. BD: 11-10-1986. 6'3", 160 lbs. 2009 Stats: AZL- 2-1, 1.40, 25.2 IP, 3 BB, 37 K's. Picked up off the waiver wire. Old for the AZL. Could be a bullpen option down the road.

I will cover some of the Dominican Summer League prospects in another post. I'm sure I've left off someone who will break out in 2010, Justin Fitzgerald? Ryan Lollis? John Eshleman? Joel Weeks? Kyle Vazquez? Orlando Yntema? Ben Wilshire? Gus Benusa? The Giants seem to be pretty high on Brandon Belt, but his college numbers were unimpressive for a first baseman. Gotta stop somewhere!

Is there anyone else who played in a stateside last year that you like?

  1. Hey DrB,

Great Stuff. As I mentioned before, Cameron Lamb is one kid that really intrigues me with his size, stuff and great 2nd half. Westcott too..

And While Baggs' Dan "Turpen"time is pretty neat, Jeremy "Toole"time isn't bad either...

How bout that kid Woodbury? Looks like he can hit?

    Again, great job.

  2. Juan Perez! But he has a lot to prove this year. I'm hoping he was still just working off the knee injury last year.

  3. Juan Perez should definitely be an honorable mention.

  4. How about Carlos Willoughby? The kid seems to have some serious speed and a decent bat, yet I have never heard him mentioned on any prospect lists.

  5. I will cover Wiloughby in my DSL Post, "Dominican Dandies."

  6. Kyle Vazquez should definitely be.

  7. Kaohi Downing is a converted outfielder. He batted leadoff for the Point Loma Nazarene Sealions and had a cannon in the outfield. His team lost in the NAIA World Series, sound crumby, but is often better than DII (Jonathan Sanchez is also a product of the NAIA)

  8. You mention John Eshleman in your closing paragraph when it looks like San Francisco native, Ryan Cavan, has beat him out at SS. Switch hitting Cavan continues to improve his hitting and showed some HR power last year. Can also play 2nd. Keep an eye on this kid!
