The Giants continued their sleep-walk through the first 4 innings today before tying and then passing crosstown rival Oakland A's 6-1. Some key lines:
Darren Ford- 2 for 2, 2 SB. Ford is playing like a man possessed. He won't make the 25 man roster, but he's on the 40 man roster, so it's not a bad idea to plant a seed of remembrance into the manager's head just in case there is a need for a callup during the season, or it may get him an extra AB or two in September after the callups.
Juan Uribe- 2 for 3, HR(2). Uribe's bat had been awfully quiet.
Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 2, 2B. RF was his to lose, and he hasn't done anything to lose it yet: .308/.357/.615!
Barry Zito- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB. Just getting his work in.
Todd Wellemeyer- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. Interesting that Wellemeyer would go in a 1 inning role with Pucetas scheduled for an upcoming start.
Henry Sosa- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.00. Sosa isn't going away.
Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. I think he has the inside track for the last bullpen slot, unless the Giants decide they have to keep both Wellemeyer and Pucetas.
Travis Ishikawa is expected to start appearing in some games soon. If Travis is ready for opening day, it will complicate Posey's situation considerably.
Another cutdown day. Again, no big surprises here: Craig Clark, Rafael Cova, Steve Edlefsen, Eric Hacker, Osiris Matos, Clayton Tanner, Dan Turpen, Craig Whitaker, Conor Gillaspie and Roger Kieschnick.
Around the league:
In a surprise move, the Nationals released OF Elijah Dukes.
Huston Street has a bum shoulder and will likely start the season on the DL. That throws two previously secure closer situations into states of uncertainty before the season even starts. The fantasy owner's nightmare!
Cliff Lee will start the season with a 5 game suspension for throwing a pitch over the head of another player in spring training.
Aroldis Chapman got the start today for Cincinnati and went 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. Chapman has to have the inside track on the Reds' #5 starter spot. If he wins it, he should be drafted or added in fantasy leagues.

Wouldn't it be just the damndest thing if Darren Ford -- picked up essentially on a throwaway deal for Ray Durham -- turned out to be a gem.
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteYup, I don't know what he found in is swing last year, but he's hitting just like he did last August for San Jose. Ford is definitely the fastest man in the organization and has other tools to go with his speed. If he can keep hitting, there is no reason why he can't become a very good MLB player.
Speaking of Ford... I was trying to project the starters for Fre, Rch and SJ, and I realized we have not heard anything about EME this ST. Is he still with the org, or has he finally been cut loose?
ReplyDeleteI think Eddy Martinez-Esteve is still in the organization. He's getting awfully close to being eligible for minor league free agency, but I think he's still with the Giants after not being selected in the Rule 5 draft. With all the emphasis on fielding stats, and a host of position prospects rising in the system, it's really hard to see Eddy having any kind of future at the MLB level, especially the NL.
