There are a couple of Giants draft reviews up. Andy Seiler has one on his blog, mlbbonusbaby.com. Just click on the link over to the left side of your screeen. He generally likes the Giants drafts of the last few year. I'm not sure, but I think he's calling John Barr the best scouting director in baseball right now. He points up a strong trend of the Giants taking talent that was previously ranked highly but whose stock fell for a variety of reasons. I think that is true for rounds 2-5, a very good strategy for those rounds, IMO, but Posey and Wheeler were both highly ranked at the time of the draft. The threw out one name that makes me drool all over myself, Austin Wilson! If you haven't seen his scouting video over on milb.com, don't do anything else until you go find it and see it. OMG! If the Giants actually draft him and get him signed, I will think I died and went to heaven on draft day!
The other draft review is on fangraphs.com. Again, the link is over on the left side of your screen. This one is a bit more mundane and doesn't make any projections for this draft. Fangraphs will be putting up a Giants top 10 prospects today or tomorrow.
P.S. Here's the address of Austin Wilson's scouting video as well as several other SoCal HS prospects:

There are several videos of Wilson on youtube.com too. Just put Austin Wilson baseball into the search function. There's one of him working the count to 3-2 in a wood bat showcase game and then ripping a no-doubt HR to left-center. He's a good student who is committed to Stanford, so it would probably take an above-slot bonus to get him signed. OMG! There's the #1 on my draft board right now!

Hey Doc,
ReplyDeleteSounds like Draft Day is becoming pretty dangerous in the B household... what with you throwing yourself down the stairs a couple of years ago, and now with the potential of a near death experience (happily, at least).
However, I don't think Wilson gets past the teens at the latest, even with all the pitching available this year. The Rays at #17 love this kind of player, and he may not even make it that far.
Yes, Seiler really does think highly of the Giants' recent drafts and Barr. Hopefully this plan of taking high end talent that has fallen out of favor doesn't get copied by a lot of other teams, but I suppose not all organizations and scouting directors have the philosophy, constitution and financial resources to be taking such gambles in the draft.
I agree about the Rays. D'Backs too. Wilson looks like a bigger version of Justin Upton! The reason he might fall is I think it will take a large bonus to keep him from going to Stanford, but the Giants might not want to take that risk either. I am totally enthralled by this kid though.
