College Corner: Friday Night Starters

This Friday night was the Night of the Strikeout, led once again by the sophomores. Let's go straight to the lines:

Taylor Jungmann, So, RHP, Texas- 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 17 K's!

Gerritt Cole, So, RHP, UCLA- 7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 15 K's!

Danny Hultzen, So(draft eligible), LHP, Virginia- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. Against Florida State, no less!

Deck McGuire, Jr, RHP, GA Tech- 9 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.

Drew Pomeranz, Jr, LHP, Ole Miss- 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 12 K's.

Thomas Royse, Jr, RHP, Louisville- 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 7 BB, 3 K's.

Pat Dean, Jr, LHP, Boston College- 8 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.

Here's a name you might want to tuck away for the later rounds of draft day: Mario Hollands, LHP, UCSB, 6'5", 205 lbs. Last night's game- 9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 16 K's. Season line- 2-0, 2.05, 22 IP, 8 BB, 23 K's.

  1. Thanks, Dr. B, for all your work. Even without the sophomores, this year's draft class seems heavy on the pitching side and a bit weak on offense. There would probably be a riot in DC if the Nats do not select Bryce Harper, but the teams picking #2 and #3 will likely be very happy to have to "settle" for Dylan Covey and Jameson Taillon, who have the stuff to be No. 1 starters down the road. And even the Giants at #24 might expect to get a good arm selecting that late. I still hold out hope they will go for a CF-leadoff type of hitter, though.

  2. Maybe the Giants can take a HS arm like Stetson Allie at #24 and then a Rico Noel in round 2?
