College Corner: Weekend Wrap

I caught innings 4-8 of USC vs UCLA on TV. Nice crowd at Dodger Stadium. My man Ricky Oropesa had a rough afternoon. It looked like the UCLA pitchers didn't didn't have any reason to throw him strikes, and there was a bizarre AB where the Bruins manager lifted his RH pitcher for a LH with the count 1-1 in the middle of an AB.

I was impressed with USC Sophomore pitcher Ben Mount, 6'8", 210 lbs. His max velocity was only 90 MPH, but he looks like he has some projectability on that frame, and he's developing his secondary stuff in the meantime.

UCLA Junior LHP Bob Rasmussen is a bit small, but ran his fastball as high as 93 MPH and showed good secondary stuff too. Could be worth a flyer in the late rounds.

Greg Peavey was a highly touted HS pitcher before the 2007 draft. He signed with Oregon State and has been inconsistent. Yesterday may have been a breakout game as he shut out Tennessee in a 1-0 game: 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.

Centerfielders who can hit are becoming scarcer than hen's teeth as more teams are deploying them in all 3 OF positions based on newer defensive metrics such as UZR. Looking at the Giants draft position and draft eligible players, it looks like they might be in a good position to take a CF in either round 1 or round 2. Here's some updated season lines for some of the draft-eligible college OF's:

Jarrett Parker, Virginia- .400/.500/.600. A perfect line!

Tyler Holt, Florida State- .421/.571/.787. Caution! FSU has played very weak opponents so far.

Leon Landry, LSU- .280/.357/.360, 6-7 SB-Att.

Bryce Brentz, Middle Tennessee State- .368/.520/.526. Probably not really a CF, but if he can play it in college, may enhance the projectability of his D at a corner in the pros. He can pitch too, so has the arm for RF.

Gary Brown, CS Fullerton- .370/..370/.556, 4 SB's The pitching here out west is a whole lot tougher than back east.

Here's a name I haven't seen discussed much: Gauntlett Eldemire, Ohio- .291/.414/.458. Take a look at last year's stat line- .313/.441/.682!, 21 HR's! At 6'3", 195 lbs, he has a very projectable body. Man, I'd love to see the Giants take him just for the name. What a great baseball name! Maybe in round 2?

Here's another personal fave: Matt Szczur, Villanova- .486/.514/.600. Szczur was also the MVP of the football team as a RB this year, so it may be hard to convince him to pass up his senior season, but gotta love the athleticism the football credentials imply. Could be an option in later rounds?

  1. Do you think his name is really gauntlett? I think it may be like Buster to Gerald Posey. I haven't heard of baseball from Ohio univesity but would be happy to have him.
