Spring Training Update: Game Wrap 03-22-2010

The Giants used a by now familiar formula to squeeze out a 5-4 win against the Rangers today in Cactus League action. Key lines:

Aaron Rowand- 0 for 2, HBP, SB(1). Rowand seems to do something a leadoff hitter needs to do every day.

Darren Ford- 1 for 2, 3B. Ford continues his Randy Elliott spring! Will have to keep doing it in AA during the regular season, but his stock with the organization has undoubtedly taken a big jump up.

Aubrey Huff- 1 for 3. Huff continues to hit for both average and power.

Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. Nice bounce back game for Nate, especially taking the walk.

Barry Zito- 6.1 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. Not quite a QS, but if he can do this in the first 2 months which are historically very difficult for him, we'll be OK.

Jeremy Affeldt- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 2.57. I'd like to see fewer walks, but Affeldt seems to be ready to start the season.

Guillermo Mota- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. Nice bounceback for Mota who is back in the driver's seat for a roster spot.

Goodness. I suppose it does qualify as "OK," just barely, but it sure sounds like BZ of '07-'08, when I was wondering what would happen if they just planted him in Fresno for the rest of his contract. The lack of BB's in this line is the only thing that sounds major league.

  2. Well, I guess my standards for Barry Zito, especially in the early season, are pretty low. I mean, I figure any game he pitches in the first two months that isn't a blowout by the second inning is better than par for the course for him. Yeah, I know it was ugly, but he got to the 7'th inning with only a 1 run deficit. The Giants still had a chance to win. I'll take that as an average start for the first 2 months of the regular season if he'll continue to pitch well in the second half as has become his pattern.
