College Corner: Friday Night Starters

The Sophomore starters continued to dominate the Friday night college baseball scene:

Taylor Jungmann, RHP, Texas- 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.

Gerritt Cole, RHP, UCLA- 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.

Trevor Bauer, RHP, UCLA- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 10 K's. UCLA has a good team this year and most of their players are underclassmen.

Sonny Gray, RHP, Vanderbilt- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 10 K's.

Danny Hultzen, LHP, Virginia- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K's. I believe Hultzen is draft eligible.

Outstanding performances by Junior starters:

Deck McGuire, RHP, GA Tech- 8 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. With Ranaudo out, Deck seems to be the dominant junior starter.

Thomas Royse, RHP, Lousville- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. Successful conversion from closing to starting.

Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Ole Miss- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.

Kyle Hald, LHP, Old Dominion- 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K's.

Barrett Loux, RHP, Texas A&M- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 12 K's. A bit of a draft sleeper, but a big kid with good numbers.

Matt Harvey, RHP, UNC- 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 K's. Once a highly ranked HS draft prospect, has been inconsistent in college.

Chris Sale, LHP, Florida Gulf Coast- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 11 K's. Lefty with reported mid-90's heat.

Adam Champion, LHP, Arkansas Little Rock- 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. Small program, but a 6'7" LHP with great looking numbers. Draft sleeper?

  1. You have Loux in there as a RHP, Texas A&M, but then discribe him as a big LHP sleeper with good numbers. Gettin enough "sleep" yourself Doc?

  2. Good to see I have my team of editors behind me here. Corrected in the main post. Loux is listed as a 6'5", 225 lb. RHP.

  3. Thanks, Doc.
Hmmm... once highly ranked, fallen out of favor...Harvey might just fit the Giants' MO. And big guy, good arm, small school... Champion could be a classic Giants mid round pick.

  4. Baseballjunkie,

I agree on both counts, Harvey in Round 1 and Champion somewhere in rounds 5-10.

  5. I'll amend the above comment to I could see the Giants grabbing Harvey if he drops to the 2'nd or 3'rd round.
