The Giants downed division rival Colorado Rockies by a final score of 7-4 to run their Cactus League record to 3-0. Key stat lines:
Aaron Rowand- 1 for 2, BB. So far, The Gamer seems to be concentrating on getting on base.
Bengie Molina- 3 for 3, HR(1). Hey, maybe he can bat cleanup! LOL!
Juan Uribe- 1 for 2, HR(1).
Giants- 7 BB's! Hey, maybe the whole team is concentrating on getting on base!
Matt Cain- 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.
Steve Johnson- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K's. Competing for a roster spot.

Thanks for the updates, Dr. B. I know ST box scores can be pretty meaningless but the key stats I have been checking on in the games thus far is team walks vs strikeouts. Hopefully Hensley gets a message across to these hitters, and so far, so good.
ReplyDeleteAlso, on a different note, I know you are a big fan of the college game. Another player I've had my eye on for the draft is OF Leon Landry. He got a pretty good write up on baseballbeginnings.com. The author of the blog apparently has a background as a professional scout. According to the scouting report, Landry had a good summer on the Cape, which the Giants like to see. Sounds like he'd make a nice 2nd round pick, which is around the range I've seen him projected to go.
I'm tracking Landry as well as several other CF types. It seems logical that the Giants would go Pitcher-CF or vice-versa in rounds 1 and 2. It will also be very interesting to see if they go HS vs college in the first two rounds. Barr went college in his first draft and HS heavy in his second. Will this year tip his hand of which way he prefers?
ReplyDeleteAre you the reader who suggested Rico Noel of Coastal Carolina? I've been tracking him and he's really tearing it up. He doesn't seem quite like a first round talent either, but I could see him being a great pick in round 2 or 3.
Yes, Noel also got a decent write-up on the baseballbeginnings blog. He'd be more like a 3rd round pick, or perhaps the Giants can gamble and try to pick him up later since he does not hail from a big school program. He sounds like he could someday be a super-sub type of player who might earn his way into an everyday or near everyday job, a very useful part of a winning team. He also played well on the Cape. I'd like to see the Giants focusing on players like Landry, Noel, Holt, Parker... the type of speed and defense player they have talked about building the team around but have never actually done so.
