Game Wrap 6/9/2024: Rangers 7 Giants 2

The Giants were 0 and 4 in Sunday road games before today.  Keaton Winn's rough start was the biggest factor in extending that trend to 0 and 5 but it was a lackluster performance all the way around and the Giants were never in the game.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .214.  YtY pops a HR here and there and that is not nothing but he still isn't really finding any traction at the plate.  BA splits are .211 over his last 7 games, .200 over his last 15 and .204 over his last 30.

Keaton Winn RHP- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 6.94.  The repeated trips to the IL due to elbow pain combined with rough starts like this have to make you wonder if he's fully healthy.  The optimistic note here is the 7 K's which would seems indicate his stuff was good and it's just a matter of cutting out the mistake pitches and perhaps better sequencing.  The Rangers ability to take advantage of a slow move to the plate with runners on base by stealing 4 was a factor too.

The Dodgers lost to the Yanks so the Giants remain 8.5 games behind them in the NL West.  They are tied with 3 other teams for the final Wild Card Playoff spot.

The Giants return to Oracle Park to face the Astros with Kyle Harrison  LHP facing Spencer Arrighetti RHP who has a 5.79 ERA but just 2.79 over his last 3 appearances.

Churn Watch:

Tyler Fitzgerald UT was optioned to AAA Sacramento to make room for Keaton Winn on the Active Roster.  That was a bit of a surprise but the word is it was because Matt Chapman 3B tweaked his hammy on the diving attempt at catching a foul liner in yesterday's game and the Giants preferred Casey Schmitt IF as the backup 3B.

A follow up to the 0-5 record in Sunday away games:  If it seems like those have been tough games for the Giants for awhile, they were 4-9 last season compared to a 79-83 overall record.

  1. in a perfect world, winn would be pitching in sacramento trying to get right, with the lack of options when it comes to starting pitching you have to make do with what you have. maybe in the short term until we get some guys healthy, we may have to rely on bullpen games with winn in the bulk innings role until he's back on track or when one of snell or ray is ready and we have the ability to option winn back to sacramento. i feel bad for the kid and i don't want his confidence rattled.

    1. There seems to be something fundamentally wrong with Winn, but, like rob says, he is being pressed into service rather.
The coaches know far better than we do, but these unprofessional eyes say something is amiss, different from the his earlier starts, especially the last 3 in April.

  2. A question about the Sunday get-away game woes: is this purely a player problem, or do the manager/coaches have some responsibility here?

This wasn't the first time the Giants' have let a opponent steal home -- seems that should not happen.

Bochy had a closed-door "talk" with his players after back-to-back poor performances against SF. They were a different team Sunday, or was it SF that was different?

  3. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th in the thrilling 0-0 Opener with Houston, Kuiper said:
"The Giants left their offense on the airplane!"
