Game Wrap 6/29/2024: Dodgers 14 Giants 7(11 Innings)

After the Giants battled the Dodgers to a standstill through nine innings and after trading designated runners scoring in the 10'th inning, the wheels completely fell off for Sean Hjelle in the 11'th inning in one of the wildest scoring lines you'll ever see.  Is this maybe some sort of record for runs scored in an extra inning?  Key Lines:

Jorge Soler DH- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .226.  Good game for Soler but I'm pretty sure when FZ signed him to be the DH, the plan was not for him to bat leadoff.  This is not the first game Melvin has dabbled with this idea.

David Villar PH/DH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .300.  Is David Villar finally going to force his way onto the long term active roster and Wally Pipp Wilmer Flores?

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, BB, SF.  BA= .286.  Ramos' BA was slipping but he had a productive evening at the plate and did decent impression of Willie Mays in CF.

Matt Chapman 3B- 3 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .241. Chapman has a 6-game hit streak in which he is 9 for 23(.391) with 2 2B and 2 HR.  On the other hand, he and Patrick Bailey failed to deliver in a 1-out, bases-loaded situation in the 10'th when they could have walked off the game.

Erik Miller LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.69. With LH batters in 2 of the top 3 spots in the batting order,  Miller opened and pitched a perfect first inning including a K of Ohtani to open the game.

Spencer Howard RHP- 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.63.  Howard was supposed to be the bulk inning guy.  I suppose you can look at his play-by-play and draw different conclusions.  On the one hand he got BABIP'd to death with with a series of bloops and IF singles.  On the other hand, if you are not striking anyone out, bad BABIP luck is going to happen.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.54.  There wasn't anything BABIPy about Hjelle's appearance as he was peppered with line drive hits.  Silver lining?  It probably does not matter if you give up 2 runs or 6 in the top of an extra inning, definitely no difference with 3 or 6.

Despite the Loss, the Giants remain 3 games out of the Wild Card playoff race.

The Giants try for a series win this afternoon with an obviously exhausted bullpen facing another bullpen game.

  1. I really like Luis Matos' in general, but he is really erratic in the OF. He made that one great play in RF where he had to jump into the net. Then he bungled that play in LF. What to with him? He definitely is an exciting player with loads of potential. When feasible, I think he needs more time in Sacramento working on his defense.

  2. Asrticles in the SF Chronicle this morning-John Shea arguing Giants should be sellers. Susan Schlusser arguing the opposite, buyers? What do you think?

  3. Wow! That was so almost!
It's too easy to second guess, but Melvin's plan to use Spencer for bulk innings and sticking to it looked good until it didn't.
And maybe using the kid to face the center of the LA order (Smith, Freeman and Hernandez) self-fulfilled itself although there was only an infield hit and a bases loaded walk ball to create the runs that carried the Dodgers to extra innings.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda, but what really stunk was figuring the W was coming in the bottom of the 9th and the BIG bugaboo of the Giants not advancing runners left the homeboys with a tie to take into the fateful extrainnings.
That hard-to-find stat, not the easy LOB, but how many runners are not advanced crippled the Giants again yesterday: 38, led by Matos with 8, Wisely and Bailey with 6 each, and Chapman with 5.

  4. do they create a 40-man roster spot by DFA'ing teng for carson seymour or carson whisenhunt or do they suffer by bringing up teng since we need a fresh arm today and black recently pitched. i hate the idea of teng coming back up but, we need his roster spot for one of cobb or ray returning. i can also see keaton winn going on the 60-day to create a roster spot.

  5. Will SF wave the white flag?
June 30th last year the Giants were 46-36, 2½ games out of 1st, not yet on their way to the collapse that began a month later when they were 61-49, in 2nd place in the NL West, still just 2½ out of 1st. Then came the collapse that cost Kapler his job.
After firing the manager and spending 100's of millions to improve the team, on entering June 30th this year, they are 40-44, 12 out of 1st in the West.
Are they to begin a collapse with a tough schedule for the next 20 games?
Or will the new pitching cavalry arrive soon enough to save the season?
Astonishingly, the Giants are not out of it.
    No white flag in sight!

  6. I think the Giants should be sellers, especially if we are in danger of getting hit for too high a payroll and can solve that. Ahmed might be someone, so could Slater/Yaz (I think Yaz). I’d even give up Conforto if we could. I doubt if Cobb has value. Not sure if any pitchers either. We need to move younger.
